Powerleap 1.2g celery locks computer after about 10min in WinXP on a abit BH6?

I posted earlier about this Powerleap not holding cpu settings... and it was the error control not working... but now, the computer locks after about 5-10min in winxp. I changed the multiplier to x11 instead of x12 and it still locks but after 10-15min. Is the CPU overheating? Powerleap advertised it at 1.2ghz when replacing a 300a. We have a full tower case with plenty of fans. The other components are a Creative TNT vid card, SB Live, 2 sticks of pc133 256mb ram and 1 stick of (i guess pc100) 128mb ram, 8gig WD hard drive, 40gig Maxtor hard drive, yamaha 20x cdrw, creative 48x cdrom, and.... I think that is it. Could it be the pc100 ram? or the vid card? Also, what exactly should the bios settings be set to on that abit bh6? Like the user defined cpu settings, the ram settings, etc...

That Powerleap is not a "normal" setup. Some of the BIOS settings dont apply. Did you upgrade the BIOS on the BH6? Your settings seem OK. Is AGP set for 2/3? I will be buying one of these soon to upgrade an old Gateway. The Gateway has very little for upgrade options without a Powerleap. In your case, the BH6 can be upgraded to a good CPU without a Powerleap setup. If it doesn't work out, you may want to just go that route.

where do you set the agp to 2/3 in the bios?

Thanks

I have that cpu myself. It worked great for about 3 or 4 days with my Xp Pro then all the sudden Im getting blue screens and then eventually it wont boot into normal mode.. keep getting a blue screen.

I take that powerleap out and put in my old cpu and it works fine. I put the powerleap back in and leave the bios settings on default.. so at this point the cpu is being detected at 800mhz. Boots into normal mode just fine.

I changed the bios settings to 100mhz with highest multiplier and set agp to 2/3 save and exit.. computer detects it as 1152mhz ( i think thats right.. 11xx anyways) and then i get the blue screen again.

Anyways it wont boot anymore at its full speed.. but other cpu works fine. Im returning my cpu back for a refund and just going with a sloket and 1ghz fcpga. Only reason i went with powerleap was because it was just easier to order and be done with it.. a lotta hassle trying to find a decent slotket.

If you have a 1.2GHz Celeron then it's pne based on the new Tualitin core (.13m FC-PPGA2). It won't work on your ABIT-BH6 as it requires a new chipset and motherboard. 3 mortherboards I suggest are the ASUS-CUSL2-C (Intel 815EP), the ABIT-VH6T (the 'T' standing for Tualitin; VIA), and the ABIT-ST6 (Intel 815EP).

Get one of those and overclock the 1.2GHz Tualitin Celeron to 1.6GHz!!!

dude, he's using a powerleap converter which is meant for using that cpu on a slot 1 board!

Did you ever figure out what your problem was with this? I am currently considering the same upgrade for my BH6 motherboard and need as much information as I can get before I buy one of these converters.

Thanks.

I have no problems with my Abit BX6 (r.2).

In my CPU "Soft Menu" I have

CPU Operating Speed: User Define
Turbo frequency: Enabled (WTH, it's a 3% O/C)
Ext. Clock (PCI): 100Mhz (1/3)
Multiplier Factor: X8 (The highest my BIOS allows for - It DOESN'T MATTER, the CPU sets it for itself)
SEL100/66# Signal: High
AGPCLK/CPUCLK: 1/1 (2/3 doesn't work)
L2 Cache Latency: Default
Speed Error Hold: Disabled

CPU Power Supply: CPU Default

I hope the above is similar to yours and it helps.

EDIT: Check the jumpers on your PL Adapter - mine were not only messed up but missing some. Do NOT set the FSB to "auto", rather to 100Mhz! Read (no, study) the PL instruction booklet and when all else fails try their Tech support.

Well, I'd like to say that mine works but it doesn't. My system locks up after about 5 seconds. Here's the text of the two strings I started tonight on the forums.

I installed the PL-iP3/T in my Abit BH6 rev 1.0 motherboard (bios SS, the latest) and it only works with 2D applications like IE, Word, etc. I also have an ATI Rage Fury 32MB video card, 128MB of RAM, Kingston 10/100 NIC, Diamondmax MX 300 sound card, and a Diamondmax K56 modem installed. All are using the latest drivers available. Oh yeah, operating system is Win98 (first edition).

If I attempt to use any application that even slightly stresses the CPU (Quake 3, Baldur's Gate 2, any benchmark), the computer locks up. I must reboot to get back to the desktop. No new software or hardware has been added to my system except this upgrade.

I'm beginning to think that Powerleap no longer checks their support page because I sent them this same problem description on Jan 22 and have yet to receive a reply.

If any of you have any information on how to get around this, please reply. Thanks.

Some of these problems sound like they could be linked to the power supply. Adding a faster processor requires more watts of power. The faster processor and larger fan may have been enough of a load added to the system to cause some of these problems. The Abit boards should work with the powerleap.

I doubt it is the PS. Mine is still running a 245w PS . . . the 1.2Ghz Celeratin uses less power than my P3@800Mhz it replaces.

And I do have to admit I am completely frustrated with PowerLeap's Tech Support. Although their adapter combo has surpassed my expectations for an interim system, I doubt I will ever buy from them again (expecting technical help).

My suggestions for users having trouble with this combo to CAREFULLY comb their BIOS as well as the "default" jumper setting on the PL adapter . . . if it doesn't eventually work as expected and PL support doesn't help, take advantage of their 30 day money back guarantee.

apoppin, I have to agree there. I've been waiting for a reply from Powerleap's tech support for 6 days now and am really disppointed since I haven't received a response. I still have another week to try to sort this out before I return it but you can bet I will if no solution turns up.

I wouldn't even consider this an interim solution. If I wanted to sit around and watch Word blaze through page after page of files this wouldn't be a problem. However, I would rather be doing something completely unconstructive: playing games.

If I must, I guess I'll break down and start building a new system. Oh well...

I have BH6 rev 1.0, last time I heard somebody said this rev doesn't support 1/4 PCI Divider, is it true?

I also have an Abit bh 6 rev 1.0 with ss bios.
I had a cerleron 300 a @ 450 for 3 years or so running fine. I just got a Celeron 900 mhz cpu and a generic slotket.
It first booted up fine but like others on here as soon as I tried to play games or mp3's ...I got weird artifacts in the textures and lockups in quake 3 etc.....some games and music would screech and pop until the sound clipped and locked up.
I tried different video cards removed the sound ,network cards and swapped ram in and out.
Now it locks on boot up.
Does anyone think I should try another slotket if I can find one?
IS is possible my bios is messed up? should I reflash?
I notice funny activity in the bios screens now...like the graphics are slow to come up when you change pages, the memory count sort of cycles from right to left....strange.
any ideas?
I had the 900 soft menu set to
CPU Operating Speed: User Define
Turbo frequency: Disabled
Ext. Clock (PCI): 100Mhz (1/3)
Multiplier Factor: X9
SEL100/66# Signal: Low or High (same results)
AGPCLK/CPUCLK: 2/3
L2 Cache Latency: Default
Speed Error Hold: Disabled

CPU Power Supply: Default 1.75 (tried 1.80 etc same)

system is :
Abit BH6 rev 1.0 ss bios
Maxtor Diamond max 40 gig 7200 rpm hdd
Ricoh cdrw
384 megs of ram
tried voodoo 3 3000 agp and geforce 2 mx 400 same crashes with fresh install of drivers and windows.
sb live
mid tower case with 250 psu
any ideas? i dont want to get a new mobo for this cpu....this is for the kids I want to build an AMD system for me.
thanks for any ideas
WW

WW, your setup looks fine. One of the kids PC's is a BH6 1.01 SS BIOS. I have a Celeron 1G @ 1.12GHz running 1.75 Vcore perfectly. Maybe you have a bad Slocket.

oldfart, so why the hell did Abit put 133FSB on it since it's basically useless? Maybe they'd tried to rif you off with this number. :)

Not sure. Some people can actually run 133/44. You have to have very tolerant components.

I gave up on PL Tech Support - they are OK only for the general questions - and would NOT recommend them because of this.
Are your settings in BIOS close to what I use?

Well, I am in Hawaii now - probably for another 2 months - and am living with my 866Mhz Dell Notebook. So, I will upgrade my desktop when I get back to Cali - if I have any money left - probably to the Northwood.

(Who was it that said it is a waste to bring computer "games" to Hawaii? - They have obviously not experienced a Kona Low and the associated rain, flooding and brown barrels (surfer sharkbait) . . . of course it is 80F . . . :)

I am pleased that this PL solution economically extended the use of my BX MB for another 6 months (and I will certainly sell the Tualatin Celery and PL adapter). At this moment, my 1.24Ghz desktop and Radeon 64 will still play the current crop of games (heck, so will my notebook - RtCW and Max Payne with the 16MB DDR Mobility Raden.

Let us know if you get this sorted out with PL.

apoppin, the only differences between my bios settings and yours are listed below.

Turbo Frequency: disabled
Multiplier Factor: X11 (it actually goes up to 12 if I remember correctly - double check that when I get home)
AGPCLK/CPUCLK: 2/3 (if changing this to 1/1 fixes my problem I'm gonna freak out)

I notice that Weekend Warrior is also using the 2/3 AGP setting and is having some odd video corruption. Wonder if this is the key...

Mmmm... Hawaii... I had the pleasure of spending 5 weeks in Honolulu as a broke, jobless student. That was some of the best fun I've ever had. <<sigh>>

I have heard from several sources, though unconfirmed by Abit, that the BH6 rev 1 does have the 1/4 PCI divider when set to 133 and using the SS BIOS. It will still only show 1/3 though, unlike the later revision.

As for Powerleap, well I was seriously considering their adapter but did not buy it because the combo was too expensive (would have had to pay tax too) and limiting without voltage adjustment and I would rather choose my own CPU at fair market price and they never responded to two e-mails and they shut down their support forum. So I went with "plan B" which was a P3 1100 in the ol' Abit slotket that had served the last upgrade. I ended up with the same performance for less money and less hassle.

I heard that too and looked into it. What I found is the clock generator chip used on the pre 1.1 BH6 boards is incapable of a 1/4 PCI divider. It is impossible to have a 1/4 PCI no matter what BIOS is used.
