This refers to both PC's in my sig (3570k gtx670, and Q6600 560ti)

Some video files play fine, but others stutter, and then freeze. Sometimes only for a fraction of a second, but then the video is all pixelated until it gets ahold of itself again.

The problem is with 1080p files, but does happen with 720p sometimes.

Im a little confused because both of these PC's should be able to handle these with ease.... right?

EDIT: Using VLC to play these files.

Is this happening during playback or are you talking about manually skipping through a video file?

during playback. Especially if theres a lot going on in the movie, the video will just freeze up and then pixelate.
VLC has trouble with 1080p for some unknown reason. Try Media Player Classic.
thanks, ill try it. Does it need any special codec pack? Or is it like VLC? How about SMplayer?
Are the files on a network?
If so what network do you have?
On the PC they live they have this problem. They actually work a little better from my other PC (the 3570k), and i play it over the network. Its a wired connection, so no problem there.

Which codec pack are you using for VLC?

none, i thought VLC doesnt need a codec pack? And i thought codec packs were just bad in general to install.

another question possibly related: If i get a blu ray drive to play blu rays on my pc, am i going to run into similar problems? What program should i use to play blu rays?

I had stuttering problems with VLC until I installed the codec lite pack, since then I have never run it without it. Give it a go.

This is news to me.. I exclusively use VLC for all my video playback needs, including tons of 1080p mkv's.

Is "hardware acceleration" enabled, so it is putting your graphics card to use as well?

It could also be a hard drive issue. When my WD Green was crapping out on me, it would play 175mb TV-rips just fine, struggle ever so slightly with 700mb AVI's of dvd quality, but would either lag, glitch, or freeze on my 1080p bluray rips of multiple GB's.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason MPC works better for some people is because the visuals will be inferior.. but probably not enough for most people to notice.

Trust me, it's definitely a VLC issue.

As for MPC quality, it's just as good if not better than VLC:
