It could be Aby Som3a, you could probably just use a 600w PSU for a Single HD4870X2 and then buy that VGA PSU to run a second HD4870X2, and call it a day. You'd have to look up some reviews though.

Do people care about price-performance and diminishing returns, or do they completely ignore common sense?

Why the hell would you XF two 4870x2's?

Because you need to pay more for your setup if your enjoyment comes from telling people what hardware you have.

do I really need a bigger psu? already ordered the 1000 watt... damn it. it is covered by newegg standard return so I should be fine.

**if you don't like it get out of my thread. I asked for advice not trolling.

I thought 1000 would be like the bare minimum. also I know that CPU is great but is it up to the level of that crossfire system? I don't want to be limited by CPU. thanks for your help

From Guru3d:

CPU scaling in games with dual & quad core processors

Cliffs: At resolutions 16x12 and up - it's all GPU. Dual/quad or AMD/Intel - no worries.

Tech Report: HD 4870 Power Consumption @ Load

HD4870x2 (X2) 'Quad CrossFire' = 752w
HD4870 (x3) 'Tri - CrossFire' = 626w
HD4870x2 single card or HD4870 (x2) CrossFire = 448w

That said .... mobos with 2 x PCIe Gen2 "x16x16"

MSI K9A2 Platinum AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX: $160

or

Foxconn A79A-S AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX (sb750): $240

with a

AMD Phenom 9850 BLACK EDITION 2.5GHz: $194

and a

SAPPHIRE 100251SR Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB 512-bit (256-bit x 2) GDDR5: $570

Going from 28-inch to 30-inch LCD basically doubles the price of the monitor. Is that worth it for you?

Heybooboo keeps recommending Phenom CPUs but there is little to no point in supporting AMD if they're simply not as good as Intel CPUs in the same price range.

I saw 2 x 4870x2 used over 750w off the wall, and that wasnt gaming, just benchmarking....with HDD spinning up, CPU @ load, I wouldnt risk $1K on anything less than 1KW
