I didn't mean "pics or it didn't happen". I meant "can you share the math". According to the screencap posted, your base multi is 43x. So what's this talk about max. +4 bins for a 3770? The base multi for 3770 is 34x and you're 9 bins higher.

No, you are perfectly correct. The -highest- multiplier available is 38x. The "trick" is ASUS's multicore enhancement. This unlocks the turbo multipliers to be used like the regular ones, which nets you 4+5 bins...

Ok, so I got a good offer through existing avenues, so I have blown my budget up... and looked at the following:

Antec Three Hundred Black Steel $60
CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 $80
Intel i7 3770 $305
ASUS P8Z77-V DELUXE $275
CORSAIR Vengeance LP 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 $86
WD Black 500GB (x2) $135
Samsung 830 Series 128GB $90
LG Black - WH14NS40 $70
Geforce GTX680 $500

This comes to about $1600.
I have a monitor and keyboard and mouse that I will use.

Unless you really -need- the very specific extra features (20+1 phase power delivery, PLX8608 PCIe 2.0 "splitter") on the Deluxe, I would go with the P8Z77-V Pro or even the P8Z77-V LK(Do not confuse with the LX version). This board is only a 4+1 phase design, so don't expect overclocking. That should save you some cash.

Also, might I ask at what resolution you plan to game?. the GTX680 seems a little "overkill" for 1080p, you might be better of with a cheaper GTX670 or 660ti...

Other then that, I can't really fault anything...():)

Thank you for your feedback. For now, I am using an old monitor that I have. This one supports 1980x1080. I will be upgrading it sooner than later, so the resolution is 1980x1080 until then. I was looking at the Pro earlier, let me take a second look. Thank you again.

Will stock cooling suffice? Should I invest in something extra (or only if I want to overclock)? If I end up getting 3770K i might do over clocking.

Thanks.

Is this available on all Asus Z77 boards? I can't seem to find the info on Asus' site.

@ bladexngt

CPU Since you're not that keen on OC'ing, I suggest taking a look at Xeon E3-1230 V2. It's 0.1GHz lower and otherwise the same as i7-3770 but costs only $234. It lacks integrated graphics but you'll be using discrete graphics anyway. On a Z77 board you should still be able to OC it slightly just like the i7's. Stock cooling is OK for stock speeds, for overclocking you need aftermarket cooling.

Mobo As for the motherboard, what do you need from it? Are there any differences (that are significant to you) between P8Z77-V Pro and P8Z77-V, and what about the P8Z77-V LK? All of these are SLI compatible.

Not going to comment on the rest of the components, two months is too long to set sights on any specific parts perhaps apart from the CPU and the motherboard. In any case, your budget is in my opinion too limited to even consider P8Z77-V or Pro, the money is better spent elsewhere.

I would suspect it, but after having looked I am not sure...

BTW, forgot the Xeon. Yes you loose 3% clockspeed, but it sure is cheaper. ASUS even list it as compatible with their Z77 boards...

@bladexngt

Like lehtv wrote stock cooling is fine for stock speed, but you will need an after marked cooler for over clocking. My older i7 920 (130W TDP) was pushing over 90C with the stock cooler with a mild over clock, needless to say that cooler was replaced...

Forget the Xeon? Why! You just lose a little bit of speed and no iGPU but he doesn't need it when he gets a GPU

This is is a pretty bad build IMHO. You can get nearly double the gaming performance for about the same amount of money. Here's how:

- Case: Good
- PSU: Switch to one with 4x PCIe power connectors like the XFX Core 650W for +$10 AR
- CPU: Switch to a Xeon E3-1230 V2 for -$71
- Mobo: Switch to something reasonable like the ASRock Z77 Extreme4 for -$160
- RAM: Can shave off a little here by going with this G.Skill DDR3 1333 16GB kit for -$20
- HDD : Can get double the capacity for only a little more with the 7K1000.C +$5
- SSD : Good
- ODD : OK if you need Blu-Ray, but take advantage of the promo to get this for -$13
- GPU: And the piece de resistance, get GTX 670 SLI for +$280 AR

Total price difference: +$21.

Now, do you need this amount of power for 1080p gaming? Probably not. This is illustrative of what you can get by spending where it matters and saving where it doesn't.

Let us know what decision you come to. :) (Preferably before you commit.)

Absolutely, I am thinking about:

Antec Three Hundred Black Steel
XFX Core Edition PRO650W
Intel i7 3770K
ASRock Z77 Extreme4
CORSAIR Vengeance LP 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Hitachi GST Deskstar 7K1000.C 0F10383
Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200RPM
Samsung 830 Series 128GB
LG Black - WH14NS40
GTX670 - x2 (SLI)

I will go with one GTX670 for now and get another when I can get a good deal on it.

Niiiiiice system! Some reassurance for you. My gaming box:

Asrock P67 Extreme4
i5 2500k at stock 3.3GHz
8GB of RAM
Single Gigabyte GTX670; it has a stock 10% (roughly) overclock
Samsung 470 SSD (OS/apps)
Seagate Momentus XT500 (Games)
Corsair HX1000 PS

I game at 19x12 with all the eye candy turned way up and haven't found a game yet that isn't smooth as glass, no hiccups, etc. Your new system as spec'd will also edit HD video very well. For video editing purposes, the only thing I'd add is another HD. Keep all video off the system drive, and have the "read the video" and the "write the encoded video" drives separate if possible. Honestly, another 2TB HD will set you back another $100; it's worth it.

The AT community really took interest in your build; this really is the best place on the internet for this type of advice and the community came through for you. Consider yourself blessed and go with it. ():)

That seems resonable for the most part, though I would recommend either getting SLI right off the bat or skipping the capability altogether. Also, you seemed to be leaning towards stock speeds, but you swapped the less expensive Xeon for the overclocking-capable i7 3770K, why is that?

Doing some reading it seems like the 3770k will have an advantage when it comes to video encoding and such. I am thinking about over clocking down the road, will get some better cooling at that point.
Thanks for the tip on the SLI, why do you say get it now or skip it?

The 3770K and the E3-1230V2 are the same thing other than 200MHz (6%) difference in clock speed and that the Xeon has no IGP. The IGP could theoretically help in QuickSync enabled applications, but encoding quality when using QuickSync sucks, so most serious packages don't use it.

As for SLI, it is the only way to reach a certain level of gaming performance today. So if you want that level of performance, it makes sense to get SLI. However, SLI is usually not a very good upgrade path because in a year's time, you could just buy the latest and greatest single card rather than having to futz with trying to find a matching (now old) card.

The Vengeance will work fine, ASRock's list is not a comprehensive list of every module that will work. Instead, it's a list of what they've tested to work.

However, you shouldn't buy the Vengeance because it has stupid tall heatspreaders that get in the way. Get this XMS3 kit for $65 AR instead.
