So, today I was tasked with stripping an ancient Dell Poweredge that had, at one point, been an Exchange server. Stripping means "Reduce it to it's various component pieces. Metal in that pile, plastic in that pile, boards in that pile, cable in that pile, CPUs in your pocket". Nothing ever has to work again - and it's a god damned good thing. I had to employ the hammer and chisel at various points.

So if you're worried about hackers with screwdrivers, buy a PowerEdge

But be careful if they upgrade to a flathead screwdriver and a hammer. Then it only takes 40 minutes to break into your system.

No, this was volunteer work. I'd *LOVE* to get paid to smash things.

Instead, I volunteer a bunch of my free time to do it instead.

The NSA would recommend the use of a sawzall (sp?) and a nail gun through the disk platters and other memory retaining components. I guess for recycling purposes I can see breaking it all down, but otherwise I'd just grab a sledge and take it apart. :D

We ganked the drives and threw them into our own servers. Normal procedure is to keep server hotswap drives (and employ them in our music/movie servers), keep anything over 8 gigs for reuse, ship everything else to the recyclers.
