My Macbook is fresh outta USB holes and I need more! So can I use any powered USB hub or are only certain ones compatible w/ the mac?

I hate to raise old threads, but I've got a problem with usb hubs on my macbook pro (could be an issue with my machine only, in which case I'll have to get it checked out). I've used the 4 port version (also powered) of that d-link hub, and it was complete trash. I dunno if it was broken to begin with, but it wouldn't detect 1 out of 4 peripherals plugged in, and it would randomly disconnect one of my external hard drives. It would also randomly disconnect ports when I plugged or disconnected a peripheral.

I had similar issue with one of those powered white belkin 7 port hubs - the thing would randomly disconnect and then reconnect all peripherals.

Now I know my usb port on that I'm connecting everything to on the laptop is okay because every peripheral connected individually works just fine. It's just when I throw in a powered hub connected to 2 external harddrives, an iphone, and a flashdrive, that problems start appearing.

Meh, any advice? I'm gonna pick up the 7port dlink hub that Kaido recommended today and give it a whirl in the mean time.

I bought a cheap Belkin 4-port hub on Amazon a few months back and it's great. I think I payed $9 with shipping for it. It's not powered, but since I only have one thing that I really need the extra juice for (external HDD), it's not a huge problem.

That's odd. I have two of the 7-port D-Link hubs and they work just dandy. Did you try both plugs on the laptop?

Hmm.. I have a Belkin 4 port that I picked up at Best Buy for $15, and it's been great. No issues, and has given my laptop more of a docking solution now..

I did try both and the issues are the same, both on the 4port dlink and the 7port belkin. I want to think something is wrong with my mbp except when connected to peripherals individually, things are perfect.

What is my next game plan?

edit: I'm splitting up the peripherals and am adding them back one at a time. I think my iPhone isn't playing nice with the other peripherals even on powered hubs.
