Seems to be available now for about 185. Is this card going to be faster than a 6800gs since it already comes with all 16 pipes unlocked?

I play at 1280 x 1024

AGP? And do the AGP ones unlock.. C'mon this is getting stupid. Bring some AGP's to market you dump Nvidia and ATI:brokenheart:

There is your answer and its pci-e, sorry.

I was about to buy it but noticed a 6800GS is about 10 bucks more so I wanted to get some advice first.

Nevermind what I just wrote, just read and its pretty much an X800XL. Go for the 6800GS, it will probably be the better choice out of the two.

a month ago, I was complely happy with getting an x800gto, then came the 6800gs... now the x800gto16...

My original choice is $40 less than my original planned outlay of cash and now I am back up to 200 again. I wonder if I keep waiting if these will all get cheaper and something better will hit my $200 price mark.

Not much longer. I prefer ATI for some odd reason, but after looking at becnhmarcks for the games I will be playing and the resolutions, the 6800GS is a slightly better card. I dont plan on overclocking and at stock speeds the 6800GS is better.

Which is a shame because I want ATI to have my money.

Seconded. ATI has wagonloads of that generation cores they just can't unload. Which is why we have the GTO2, and now this variant as well.

The only way partners can move the chips is by making higher end cards, and selling them as low end or mainstream cards. The 6800GS at $180-ish is going to force these 'value' cards down in the below $150 category. Nobody sane is going to pay > $240 for an X800XL (current prices on pricewatch), so ATI partners have to come up with gimmicks to sell the same card as a model at a much, much lower pricepoint.

Just a few more weeks to go until after xmas/return&rebuy season is over. I expect to finally have some price movement mid Jan or so. The demand is sky high right now, and some supply problems (see: Inq) are driving pricing.

Very good info. Since they are pretty close performance wise I will go with the less expensive one and wait a few weeks to get it. I might be able to get a larger hard drive with the savings or replace this aging Live 5.1.

Ok, I think I am missing something here. The powercolor x80016 is reputed to have 16 pipes default. However, it is listed on newegg and the powercolor website as having only 12. I remember that newegg reported it had 16 pipes a few weeks ago, and the anandtech article said it had 16 as well. Did Powercolor change it? I was thinking of buying it since it had 16 pipes, but I will not if it only has 12. What gives?

It's a good card from what I've read especially if you're not into overclocking your video card. If you do overclock then the regular 12 pipe(256mb memory) GTO cards (esp. Connect 3D card and Saphire Fireblade edition that has external power supply fitting) will O/C a lot higher and from the reviews I've read will actually outperform the 16 pipe model in most cases! Of course you are not gauranteed any O/C at all so the sure fire route would be the 16 piper.

Right, that's why I want the 16 pipe card. However, I am now doubting that this powercolor card really is a 16 piper. If the manufacturer website is to be believed, which seems likely, it is only 12.

Wagon loads huh? Then I guess we might see AGP versions after all :)
