Powerbook RAM upgrade.

I am purchasing a 12inch powerbook tomorrow.

is it worth 180 dollars to upgrade from 512mb ram to 1.25?

i guess more is always better... just wondering if at a certain point more won't make much more of a difference.

thanks.

If you're planning to do anything serious* with it, then yes, get more than 512MB.

$180 is the Crucial price, which is worth consideration for their reputation and returns policy, but you could easily knock 1/3 off that by buying from Newegg

*Serious = pro photo editing, pro publishing, software development, any gaming at all, any video editing at all. Not serious = Word, IM, browsing, email

I suggest buying one gig of 333 DDR RAM from NewEgg - you'll pay half as much for exactly the same performance.

I didn't even boot my 12" Alu 1.33 before I put in the 1G upgrade chip.

i would buy it. The newegg one will save you some money and should be fine. I put a stick from compusa in my powerbook and have not had any problems.

Definately upgrade but don't over pay with Apple prices. Get the stock 512, then buy a 1 gig stick for $80 from your favorite online retailer. Sell the 256 module thats in the laptop. Then your set. OS X absolutely loves RAM so max it out.

Yeah definitely go for the extra ram, OSX loves it, and definitely get it from a 3rd party source like newegg. You do want DDR (not DDR2) as stated above. 12" powerbooks use pc2700 DDR, while 15" and 17" powerbooks now use DDR2.

thanks for all of the help

could you direct me to a place that would tell me how to do this?

i have never fooled around with a laptop before. scares me a little.

Get a screwdriver.
Unscrew the RAM door.
Plop in the new RAM.
Screw the RAM door back in.
Return the screwdriver.

Total time: Under 3 minutes.

The powerbook instruction manual tells you how to upgrade ram. If you don't have a manual you can download one from apple.com. Basically you do what dclive said, but first remove the battery and well... make sure the unit is off (which is fairly obvious).
