Power went out for the entire neighborhood

I was just doing some homework, then out of the corner of my eye I see a flash of light outside and then the entire house went dark.
I figured no big deal, maybe my eyes played a trick and this will be short outage, so I head out to the grocer to get a snack. (microwave no worky 🙁, take my time, see the other neighbors still have lights. Come back and find everything still dark. So I take my office UPS and hook it up to my wireless router and modem, and am now surfing in the dark with what's left of the batteries in my laptop.

Anyone live in Canyon Crest area of Riverside, Ca? This sucks... just waiting for it to suddenly go completly dark...

Fusing on the pole / pad mount probably blew. Assuming that the fault was on the low side of the transformer. Are we talking three to five houses out or dozens? It could be that the fusing for that whole feeder is out. Either way, the company will have a troubleman out shortly (assuming that someone has told them), and they should be able to re-fuse it quickly. If the actual transformer is damaged, that might take a bit longer.

It was a drunk driver or an idiot driver. Slammed into something street level. Big green box, whatever was in it I guess handled the power distribution. I woke up this morning and the power was restored a little later. I also now know my UPS will power my cable internet modem and wireless router for 8+ hours, as I found it still going this morning. I hadn't plugged it back into the socket when I moved it downstairs, so it was still running off battery.

I also know it took them 10 or so hours as when I got up this morning at 7, there was still no power. About 8 am is when it came up and it went out about 10 last night.
 
1. Call your ISP and tell them that you can't seem to get online or call your cable provider and tell them the cable went out, but don't tell them the power is out.

Another customer called Compaq tech support to say her brand-new computer wouldn't work. She said she unpacked the unit, plugged it in and sat there for 20 minutes waiting for something to happen. When asked what happened when she pressed the power switch, she asked "What power switch?"
