Power usage question ?!?!?!?

I have an abit nf7-s motherboard and an athlon 2500+
1 gig of pc3500 memory
and a gf4 video card

my question is am i right in assuming the voltages are supplied to the components in the following way ?

northbridge, southbridge, memory = 3.3v rail
cpu, hard drives = 12v rail
vid card = 5v rail


i will be ordering a custom psu and am just trying to decide how many amps i want on each rail

I have to say, either your Antec Tru480 was faulty or damaged because that is easily enough power to support your system...

How much are you going to throw down on a new PSU now???

the antec 480 is not faulty it just don't have adjustable voltage pots
so it can't be used to overclock very much at all with my motherboard

i plan to throw down as much as i need to
maybe 300

i'm getting the new psu mainly because it will have adjustable voltage pots but also for upgradeability
that's why i am gonna put massive amps on each rail


anyone know which rail the memory/chipset/vid card use on the abit nf7-s ???

WHY?!?!

Those adjustable voltages are not going to make enough of a difference in your overclocking to merit anything over $100.

You would be better off to buy a new video card and new PSU. Or just use that for an Athlon 64/ Prescott.

Totally pointless IMHO.

heh i'm willing to bet a new psu will increase my fsb speeds from 210 to as high as 230 and that is plenty enough reason for me to upgrade

soon as tuesday comes around i'm gonna call up pc power and cooling
they are in the same county as me so i could prob drive over and pick it up when it's done

lets see i payed 400 for my mem bout 100 for the cpu 110 for motherboard 220 for the vid card why shouldn't i spend 300 for the most critical component in this mess

yeah i'm thinking about getting it as follows:

12v 50amps
5v 50amps
3.3v 50amps



unless any of you think one rail requires more current than the others (think future upgradability) ??

dang I called pc power and cooling today and they said they can't increase the amps on any of the rails for me
they said the 510 is pretty much maxed out

this blows i want a psu more powerfull than any out there today


also they said the price of the 510 deluxe will drop 70 bucks in 4 weeks when they get a shipment in from overseas
so i might be waiting, unless i get impatient

I agree with the others. Either your PSU is faulty or your components are at their limits. Dell ships their 1600 servers with 450 watt PSUs. These are up to dual 3.06 GHz Xeons, 4 gigs of ram, dvd/cdrw, tape drive and 6 146 GB 15k rpm scsi drives. Surely a properly performing 480 watt Antec would power your system adequately. Heck, I have a True 330 powering a system very similar to yours.

I suggested the Antec TrueControl 550 in your other thread... It has the rail adjustments you want, and is inexpensive compared to the PCP&C.

The TrueControl 550 runs everything in my sig AND a VapoChill XE... 😉 It is nice to be able to tune the rails without having to open the PSU. (Not to mention the potential hazzard and voiding the warranty) 🙂 You seem to have your mind made up though... Good luck with your TurboCool 510. My TurboCool 425 has been gathering dust for awhile now since I purchased the TrueControl.

TurboCool 510 specs:

+5V: 40A
+12V: 34/38A
+3.3V: 30A

Antec TrueControl 550 specs:

+5V: 40A
+12V: 24A
+3.3V: 32A
