Power Trouble

Hello,

I just got a Antec P150 case to replace my server case but am having problems.

Specs:
AMD Sempron 2200+
Abit VA-20
512Mb RAM
80Gb Seagate Hard Drive
ATI 9600 Pro

I have move all the parts to the new case but when I power on it powers on for a second if that???

I have removed the motherboard and checked for any shorts none found.

I also tried another PSU which works but does not power the CPU fan nor the graphics card fan?
Which I am rather worried about!!

Any help welcome

12V seems to be shorting out somewhere on the bord.

try jumping the power header on the motherboard. maybe your switch is bad.

Strip it. Bare essentials. Locate the short by process of elimination. Post the board outside of the case, etc. Could be just an extra stand off. Who knows until you undo what you've done.

If you are using the bundled NeoHE PSU, there are two possibilities:

1. Instead of the ATX12V connector, you connected the main ATX 4-pin plug connector into the ATX12V mobo header.

2. I have seen on the web that if your system is too lightly loaded, the NeoHE PSU may have trouble starting up your system.

Ok I removed the motherboard outside the case but it still does not turn on woth the NeoHE PSU.

The other PSU turns it on but the CPU fan still does not turn on?
I turned it on using the Power SW on the motherboard header instead of the case switch.

I am not quite sure what you mean about the ATX 4 pin plug, the VA-20 only has a plug for the 20 pin but none for 4 pin plug

An amen to that. It's tough to have to bite the bullet and undo work but sometimes it has to be done.

I have tried the motherboard with nother case and just have tried it out side the case??

I am still confused about this, I now can't even get any power on the other PSU? No fans move what so ever?

Connect the two power plugs to the MB. Add keyboard, mouse and hard drive. Put MB on a piece of card board. Short the power pins on the board and check for boot.

Note: remove all cards and add-on devices. Reseat RAM module.

No unnecessary components. The power supply isn't even powering up, never mind post. What good is a mouse and hard drive going to do you?

I hate to ask but did you make sure to connect the power cable for the cpu heatsink/fan to the motherboard?

lol, yes a did. I've been building computers for years.

I am going to have a look at it tomorrow when I am fresher.

I built HD diesel engines for years and never had one go sour because of my workmanship. Sticking close to the basics of good work practice saved me many times.
An attitude of I've been doing this for years does not guarantee success, it can however cause us to overlook the obvious. It's called contempt.

Are you sure the fans tach wire is making contact with it's proper board jack.?

I did suggest you take a look over at SPCR because about 30% of the guys with this case/PSU combo had a DOA and 52% had some kind of problem...OK

I'm considering my 5th build in 4 years, so the basics are familiare to me.

Hi, Did you move the battery jumper per the MB manual. Some newer board will not power up until you do. Good Luck, Jim

Thanks all for you help.

I have been testing all the parts of my server and it looks like the Antec PSU has blown 2 hard drives, DVD ROM Drive, 1Gb RAM, CPU and Motherboard.
I have just started the RMA process for these items.

As you can image I am rather cross with the P150 and hope I can get most of the items replaced. The RAM I can't because it is out of warranty, not the best two days i've had.

Forgive my arid sarcasm, and present company excepted, because the unit bears the name "Antec" they will continue to be forgiven. Fascinating.

I have brought many Antec products and have not had anything other than an excellent experience.

I am just a bit sad about losing most of my server!!

razor, the P150 is a very nice case indeed but the knowledgable/savey eBay it's PSU for
about $40 and up-grade at first build.
Our Cases & Cooling forum has some info about the P150 and should have been searched
before this purchase. The mainstream responce over there is younger and will boarder on
being rude at times but generally honest none the less.

I'm sorry you have to resolve this difficulty.

There have been many posts about the 430's warrenty seal being already found broken
when the case's packaging in first opened. That is not a good sign. So do not be suprised
if the warrenty seal tape is found slit/broken. If you have to, do a search for this complaint
so it can be forwarded with your RMA.

Interesting, thanks.

The case is very nice and I still will get it instead of a refund but as you suggested it might be better to purchase a separate PSU.

I am surprised at the volume of problems this PSU has caused other users. But in my defence when I purchase a £100 or so case
I expect the PSU to be of high quality to match the case.

When I brought my Antec Sonata v1 case it had a very high quality PSU, it is a shame they replaced this for the newer NeoHE.
