I am looking at getting a cordless combo kit. I want a 1/2 in drill, a reciprocating saw, a circular saw, possibly and impact wrench. I do not need a flashlight or a radio. i want good tools. i have had good experience with deWalt, Milwaukee, Craftsman. herd bad bad things about ryobi, and great things about Rigid.

I have looked at all of them and its hard to tell a difference without using them for a few years. I just bought a very old pickup truck camper and am going to remodel it. It is a great excuse to get some new tools. I always have projects going and am sure to use all of these tools quite a bit for a long time. I currently live in an apartment and power may be very inconvenient to get to where i work on the camper. i also work on cars and do projects for other people.

budget: 500ish, but lower is better.

what are your observations and opinions?
 
I hate the kits. I buy the tool i need when I need it.

That and I hate cordless circular saws. They run out way to fast and I have used good name brand ones as well.

Also check out craigslist and fatwallet for used ones or sales.
 
Just buy what you need. I also cannot imagine buying a kit. i could see getting one as a gift to somebody buy who, for example, needs three nailers (two of which are basically the same thing)? That's what lowes was selling as a combo recently. The two low-end ones were basically the same. Thus I think only people who don't know better and are buying as a gift would want that package.
 
i will use the recip saw the drill and the impact at very least and it seems like these two things are more useful cordless. any personal experience on brands? i know the battery powered impacts are not great, but i don't have room for a nice air compressor in my apt.

isn't it better to have tools that all use the same battery and charger?
buying the tools separate will cost more than the kit also.

i am a little bit more informed than your avg. homeowner. spare me the "you don't want that" remarks.

yep. i know. the place is still under construction and its not a big deal right now, and i am getting a garage as soon as they come available.

Not even in the garage. some places are crazy with rules.

realistically, cordless power tools are not really suitable for auto work.
