Power Supply shot?

I'll be honest, I'm not one who turns my computer off very often so there'll be months in which it'll be on with no restarting or being turned off. Today I was cleaning up my room a little bit and decided that I would turn the computer off and open up the case and clean out the dust that's inside of it. Well I did that and when I was done everything seemed to still be hooked up like it was prior so I hooked it all up. Well now my computer won't turn on at all. I get no lights on the case, no sound that it's attempting to boot, nothing. I believe it's the power supply but wanted to find out for sure.
 
Yeah I've checked the switches and plugs on it. The PSU was bought about a year ago and it hasn't developed any of those smells, atleast I haven't noticed it.
 
How old is the motherboard?? Are the caps leaking, bulging or tilting?

Look at pics over at http://www.badcaps.net/

Sometimes...warming up dried out caps with a hair dryer will get a board to post, then boot.
The board will need to be replaced or repaired but it is a diagnostic tool.

They look fine, I just checked them out. Now my psu is an Antec and I've read a few threads on here saying they haven't been very reliable lately, didn't know if that would make a difference. The board is the same, bought about a year ago.
 
If the board and PSU are OK, you must have pulled a connection on the board or
shorted a wire that cause the PSU to open. Unplug the PSU for awhile then try to boot.
Unplugging for 5 minuets will caused the PSU to reset.
You might have pulled a wire over a sharp edge. 🙂

The Antec TP and SmartPower units use Fuhjyyu capacitors. Google them and see.

I had it unplugged for a while so I just tried plugging them back in and starting it up, nothing. Now there's a green light on my mobo that came on so I don't know if that'll help determine what's wrong.
 
I gotta shower now. You might end up pulling the board out of the case and seing if it
will post with just RAM, CPU and VGA.
It was working fine until you cleaned it. Sounds like a short or pulled connection to me.

How would I ground it out of the case? Also wouldn't it be easier to test the power supply by putting another one in there to see if it boots up?

Motherboard: ASUS A8N-SLi Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2200MHz
Memory: 1024MB of Corsair DDR
Video Card: ATI Radeon X700 Pro
Hard Drive: Western Digital 250GB
Monitor: Samsung SynchMaster 914v

epelbnista, even though a vacuum cleaner wasn't involved, the can of air will cause the same thing to happen? Is that why you posted that? Just trying to find out because if it's more than just the power supply then I'm screwed unless I can get replacements under the manuf. warranties.

Now I have used this can of air to clean out the insides of computers before and have never had a problem.

I just posted it just as an FYI, as I didn't see any mention of the method of cleaning that was used. As for the possibility of a similar thing happening with a can of air, I honestly wouldn't think it would.
 
Ahh gotcha. I have never used a vacuum cleaner to clean the inside of a computer, never even thought about doing that. Guess some people will do anything.

My Uncle came down and took a closer look at my computer and noticed one of the caps was tilting over. It must have been in a spot that I didn't look at very close. So would that be my problem for it not booting?
 
You may have damaged your board...never physically apply pressure to internal electronics or use vacum attacthments. I use air blowers. Broken capacitor?
 
Yeah I used the air in a can to blow out the dust, no vacuum attachment was used. My other uncle was just over this morning and he looked at it and checked the connections and everything was okay and he believes it's the power supply as well. So I need to get a hold of Frys and see if they'll replace it since it was less than a year ago that I bought it.
 
emm hello all, this is my 1st reply to anything on this forum, and i don't do this at all to begin with. so anyway here's my 2cents; probably totally bogus but u might want to take out the battery and reseting the bios- anyway hope your problem is not that serious.BTW i was linked to this forum- i am looking for a good cheap power supply for an Evga 7900GT KO needing 400W +12v@20A+ for singleand they say 500W 12V@28A for SLI.
i just ordered my 7900 today, but its not going to do me any good without the PSU. i plan on ordering a PSU within the next day, any help/thoughts would be appricated--TY
