power supply question

I'm a noob at this... my other computer won't turn on, and I've tried everything, short of installing a new PSU. It's an old Compaq listed here:

Situation: I left it on while watching tv, only to return and see that it was shut off. Now the power button won't turn it on. My question for you guys is this:

It states that the comp uses a 235W steady state power supply. Can I use a 300W one? Or am I going to have to find a 235W-250W power supply for it?

Thanks
Peter

Better yet, if its an ATX case, buy real decent PSU, so that when you upgrade later you can still use it for your new rig.

No, swapping out a power supply is one of the easiest things to do on a computer.

Don't be intimidated.

sadly, the power supply did not fit. BAH!

The casing didn't fit, but I was able to bypass that by flipping it over (upside down) and screwing it in. (is this okay?)

But the power connector to the motherboard did not have enough pinholes to cover the whole bar. Isn't there a standard that makes them all the same? It's a P4 Compaq computer, and the power supply is an ATX 300W Power supply with "Intel P4 Full Support" and "AMD P4 Full Support". The connector on the mobo supports a 2x12 pin connector while the ATX provided a 2x10 pin connector.

Even after buying an adapter that makes it a 24 pin connector, it still won't start up... what else could be wrong? mobo? power button?

Any help is greatly appreciated
