Power Supply Question

Hey there folks-
The PSU in my main rig recently died. I ordered an Antec True-430 for Newegg as a replacement, but it turns out I can't use it because it has an extra external 4-pin connector that doesn't fit in my case. Of course, even though it's been more than 30 days since I ordered it and I'm only just now installing it, Newegg is being awesome and letting me do an RMA.

What PSU would you guys recommend that doesn't have any extra stuff on the back? I don't want Enermax as that's the brand that just went bad on me. It looks like the Antec SL models don't have an extra connector. What other brands do people recommend?

Thanks in advance :)

Do you mean my old PSU, or the new one?

The old one is definitely dying. I posted an earlier thread about that one, and we all agree it was dead.

The new PSU definitely won't work- the 4-pin connector doesn't fit through though the hole in the back of my case. I could take a hacksaw to it- in fact, that's what I was going to do if Newegg wouldn't do the RMA.

As it is, I'm just ordering a new PSU.

Oh I see, the power cable connector would not fit the back opening on your case, that's what you mean? No, that's a 3 pin connector. What 4 pin connector do you mean, and why would you want it sticking out the back of your case? The 4-pin square molex connector that plugs into many nForce2 mobo's? If that's it, you don't need to connect it if your mobo does not have the connector.

4-pin connector in back of PSU? I'm confused, and I have the same Antec PS.

well, antecs have a 4 pin connector on the backside of the power supply that is covered with a plastic cover. i had to bend my case a bit to make the psu fit flush. perhaps he means that?

antec and enermax (a bit expensive imo) makes great psu's. i went a little different route and purchased a thermaltake silent purpower 480w from newegg (yes, they're great, aren't they?) and am quite happy with it. soid power, quiet, and my oc'd system is very stable. i miss that "fan only" molar connectors that my antec has tho..

yeah. it's for testing fans, etc. externally. just plug it in to test it.
useful if you're into lots of case-work.

all PSUs go bad. i have an enermax go bad on me. i had a few generics go bad on me. i also had a couple antecs go bad as well. enermax is still a respectable brand. in fact, i still favor them over antec. pcpowerandcooling makes some good PSUs, but they are expensive. they do have the longest warranty i have ever seen.

Here's a picture of the Antec with the 4-pin connector on the back of the PSU:
Antec True-430

I know someone already mentioned that they have this PSU and it doesn't have the connector, but I think they have modified all the PSUs in the True-XXX line recently to add this connector. If you look at the pictues on newegg, some True models show it and some don't. I ordered the True-430 which didn't show the connector in the newegg picture, but the PSU I got looked like the one in the link above.

The plastic cap comes off, but the connector still sticks out from the PSU. So if your case covers this area, you would need to cut it open somehow. But I bet some cases have a hole big enough to accomodate the 4-pin connector. Unfortunately mine does not.

The Antec SL line (not the True line) don't have this connector, so I'm going to get one of those instead.

I thought 2 years was too short. I bought an expensive high-end Enermax because I didn't want to have any problems. I'm going to try Antec next. If this one dies quickly, maybe I'll try pcpowerandcooling. I'm willing to pay a premium for a product that will last. But I'm not going to sit back and tell myself "it's ok, all power supplies die" and keep buying Enermax products.

cool thanks for the pic/info. what are the spec differences (if any) between the true line and the SL line?
