Power supply question .............( Fixed ... Thanx ! )

Would anybody here know why a PC would bootup ( power on ) by just turning on the power supply switch ?

I just put back together my system after getting a DDR based Athlon board and ram and the only thing that was a problem is this powering up of the PC simply buy turning on the switch on the power supply. If I go to shutdown in Windows it'll shut down fine. But then if I switch the power supply switch to the off position then a moment later switch it back to the on position the PC will bootup.

Any ideas or has this happened to you ?

Fixes ? Did I overlook somthing ?

Thanks for any info.

I am not sure what you mean by "turning on the power supply switch". ATX cases have a momentary close switch on the front that sends a signal -- via the ATX supply -- to the motherboard to cause it to boot. Old AT cases actually had a power supply switch you turned on to turn on the power supply and off to turn off the supply but you should not have a power supply switch with an on and an off on your case -- only the momentary close switch that initiates the boot process as the power supply comes on. Out of curiosity, how are you "turning on the power supply"?

Gustavas, my Enermax has a power switch on the PSU. This can shut down system power altogether (i.e. the LED on my A7V133 will go out).

Savatage, curious to know a few more details:
1. What OS are you using?
2. When you shutdown, does your computer power-down completely or do you get the screen that says something like "It is now safe to turn off your computer"

look in the power management section in your BIOS. Some motherboards will have a setting for what to do after power failure (stay off, re-boot). If you have it set to re-boot (its called different things in different BIOS') everytime you trun your power strip off, it will start itself up whenver you turn the power strip on (even if you did a normal shutdown). Change it to 'stay off' (or whatever your BIOS calls it) and it will stay off till you turn it on by the case power button. NOTE, there are some boards that do not give you this option & will always power back up after power failure or always stay off.

I just downloaded the User Manual from the Enermax site. This is the first PS I have seen since the days of the IBM XT with the power on/off switch on the supply and not on the case. Sorry to have butted in, but I do have a question. After a normal power down -- say in Windows 98 -- where the OS has signaled the supply to power down, how do you reboot your computer? Do you still use the momentary close switch on the case? As best I could tell the manual doesn't indicate how you would connect such a switch even if you have one. Thanks for the info so I will know in the future.

I think birddog has the answer for me in this situation. As this happened right after the motherboard was installed with just the vid card in. I'm running Windows Me BTW but this does sound like a bios setting. I'm gonna check this out right now.

Thanks people 😎

Gustavus,

This system runs normal in Windows Me ... meaning I can reboot and shutdown via the start buton ect. I don't get the " it's now safe to shutdown you computer " message. I have a generic midtower case with an Enermax 350 WTT P/S with a switch on the power supply itself. Like mentioned above since this a new motherboard for me and I don't know all the bios settings yet for it, it's probably a setting in there I have to disable.

Thanks again all for the feedback.

FIXED ! ! !

Cool, it was a bios setting. Default was to return to same state or somthing like that. Reset it to power off. Shut it down, turned the P/S switch to the off position .. waited a min .. then set the switch to the on and no booting 🙂 Now she has to have the power button on the front of my case hit to power on. Just like normal.

Thanks for the help.
