Power supply, how to install? <----Input needed quick, hurry, c'mon!

I think i need to upgrade my power supply, its 250w and i have a amd1ghz , 384ram bout to upgrade + 256mb more ram , Geforce 3ti200 with standard hsf attached, v. 92 modem blaster and usb keyboard/mouse and sb live xgamer.

Lately i have been hearing a fan which i beleive is my geforce fan like sound like its getting slow, then it speeds back up. Someone told me i might need to get a bigger psu , i don't really have much money so i need to know if i really need a new one or what, also if i do get one is it hard to install?

Installing a PSU is very easy. All you do is remove the screws (usually 4) from the old PSU and then pull it out. Then all you have to do is set the new PSU in. 250W may be a little low for that setup. How many hard drives and CDRoms do you have?

I would be very suprised fi you could hear your GF-3 fan at all. Usually the CPU's HS fan is the noisiest unless you have a loud case fan. I would try pulling off the side case panel and listening closely to see what fan it is. Be sure to ground yourself on the case frame before you touch anything inside.
What kind of HSF are you using on the AMD?

i did that and it was coming from the geforce 3 fan, i'm using the standerd hsf for my amd that came with my computer. I have one dvd drive, a cdrw drive and 1 3.5 floppy drive, my hard drive is 40gig

good possibility that is is your PSU thats causing your fans to slow down and such. its either that of dust in the fan (which i doubt it is) or a dying fan, but that probably would cause it to make noise a lot more often.

Have you tried lubricating the fan to make sure there is really a problem? My GeForce3-Ti200 fan started to get noisy, but after lubricating it everything is running nice and quiet now. Just remove the fan, peel back the sticker, put a few drops of mineral oil in, spin the fan around to distribute the oil, put the sticker back on (tightly), reattach everything, and see if this solves your problem. The fan was snapped into the heat sink, so I had to pry the fins back a minute amount until the fan would snap out.

I don't know what the problem is with these small fans, but both the GeForce3 fan and the KT266A Northbridge fan on my system have had regular noise problems. When the Northbridge fan gets noisy it is by far the noisiest part of my system.

It might be ok if it's a really good 250W power supply, but that seems like towing a big trailer with a small economy car. Replacing the power supply is pretty easy, since all the plugs only fit what they're supposed to be plugged into. Just unplug all of its wires from the drives, the motherboard and so on, and then unscrew the screws holding it to the case, and take it out. Note that the motherboard fitting has a little catch on it to keep it from coming unplugged accidentally, so you have to release the catch to pull that one out.

If your video card's fan is wearing out, you might try contacting the manufacturer to ask if they'd send you a new fan. Often the fan is held on with small screws and is plugged directly into a fitting on the video card. Good luck. 🙂
