Should I buy a power supply that states it is great for SLI technology or can I buy and old 550W+ power supply if I want to run two video cards? Should I get 580W or 680W?

You should compare the complete specs of all models you are considering against the actual power usages of your components. I'd advise getting a power supply that is rated at 20% larger than your needs.

See the power supply thread for a power usage calculator.

And "QUALITY" psu at 500w+ should be able to do the job.

Take for example the Seasonic S-12 500w. It's a great psu and it's even sli certified. Hell, if your paraniod you can get the S-12 600w model :p

Any Quality PSU should do the trick. From what I understand it doesn`t have to be SLI approved.....all you would need to do is get you a splitter.

Also check out the Fortron PSU`s best bang for your buck bar none!

Can the seasonic 500W run this ok, what do you have?

A8N32-SLI, opteron 170, 7900GT x2

ps: is the 175 worth it over the 170?

I own an Enermax Noisetaker 600w. Perfect of SLI. I got rid of my 7800 GTs, though. Now I have 1 x1900xt

Yes.

The xtx is comparable to the 7900gtx, and the only difference between the xtx and xt is a little bump on clock speeds. (but the xtx is more overclockable)

It's plenty.
