What type of connection is a power supply fan?

Is it just the regular 4 prong deal, or is it a 2 prong fan?

Out of all the PSUs I've opened up, the fans used 2 wires, (red/black) and connected to the PSU PCB. However these weren't the MOST recent and of the highest quality (300W no name psus)

To make a long story short, I have a power supply fan dying on me and I want to leave the server running while I get a new one to replace it...

(I don't want to take it out and look at it...)

So it's just the black and red wires? Do they have a connector on them or are they just wires (and I'm dealing with an old compaq ps unit so it's old...
 
um...i hope you know the capacitors inside the PSU will give you a real nasty shock unless you let the discharge a real good amount of time...

i've taken apart 3 PSUs and all of them had two wires connected directly to the PCB - no connector, and probably no way to do what you wanna do...
 
I once tried to change a flat tire while the car was driving down the road. It didn't work. Sounds like yo're in the same boat. 😀
 
Power supply fans are soldered into the circuit board. I don't think you could use a case fan as a replacement since the guage on power supply fans is mighty thick. Also I think that PSU fans are very high wattage!

If you are trying to replace the fan you might want to try a electronics store for a suitable replacement. You probaly going to buy a new PSU if the fan is out!
 
i was bored so i thought of a way you MIGHT be able to do it - but keep in mind i am not an electrical engineer so this may be dangerous....

1. remove screws for PS fan
2. clip the red/black wires (give yourself a few inches to work with - at least half the length of them)
3. get a replacement fan with 2 bare-wire leads
4. get two wire connectors - yknow... those plastic cap things you use to connect two wires...
5. connect red on red, black on black using the connectors - of course fan should start spinning when you do this
6. CAREFULLY screw in new spinning fan (grab it by the middle and stick a pencil or something in it to stop the spinning)

Possible problem - when you clip the wires you need exposed wire to make the circuit... I wouldn't recommend stripping a live wire (especially since I always do it w/ my teeth) but those wire connectors could possibly fix the problem - i don't know if they're conductive on the inside...
 
I currently use a PSU fan as a case fan - the only difference is that it's bare-wire... amps/volts/gauge of wires are the same... lots of people replace their PSU fans w/ silencers and panaflos and whatnot...

FWIW, I just took apart my Antec 400 watter and it's a 2-pin connector.

Actually, it's a 2-pin connector from the fan to the little thermal censor circuit board. The circuit board then plugs into the main powersupply board via another 2-pin connector.
 
Another (easier) option would be to:

1. get a 3pin case fan and attach it to a 3pin wire extender
2. screw the fan in
3. run the wire through wire exit-hole or vents in PSU (may have to remove/reconnect 3-pin connector)
4. plug extension into fan header on mobo
 
I've replaced the fans in two power supplies with quieter models that used a 4-pin connector.

How did I do it?

Clip the leads, strip them, &amp; crimp matching colors together.

Simple as that.

I just swapped a fan in an older (1995) power supply for a new sunon 3 pin. The connector was 2 pin, but the wires were reversed. So I turned the connector around and jammed it on until the plastic orienting tab broke.
Ham-fisted solutions like this are not the best, but they are quick 🙂
