Power supply failure diagnosis

Working on a friend's PC (Compaq) and PC will not turn on. When I turn the PC on, light goes green and then flashes red. Fan in PS does not run. Are there any other tests to check for PS failure??

Thanks for the response. I have tested the probes using a multimeter. However, for whatever reason, Compaq uses a 24 pin connection. Any other ideas.

Try to find a manual or pin-out diagram for that power supply connector. There has to be a couple pins you can connect to short it and turn the power supply on.

Thanks for the response. The lady whose PC is in question and her sig other decided to order a new power supply. They traveled all over San Diego looking for a replacement. Frys, Best Buy, CompUSA, etc. and were told that the only place they could purchase one was from Compaq. They called Compaq and were given the old not here, let me connect you to someone else, or call this other number. Long story short, they still have not found the right place to order yet. Another reason not to buy a compaq.

Also, I might add that this 175 watt power supply is $139 plus shipping and tax here in CA dreamland.

Just buy a new computer if it costs that much to get it replaced!

Have you checked Pricewatch to see if it is available any cheaper?

Yeah, I suggested a new PC. She doesn't need a super fancy one, since all she does is a little word processing, email and some surfing. But........

Also have checked out Pricewatch, but did not see any Compaq power supplies listed.

Not sure what she plans to do.

Try HERE
Call them at Directron if these don't look like winners.
I checked the less than 200 watt category but no 175 watt Comcrap units in there.
If you know either the PC or psu model #...let us have it.

Well I'll give you the details of my PSU failure **G**

Turned off the computer & unplugged everything lastnight because it was storming big time (I live in Florida)
Woke up this morning & plugged everthing back in , hit the power button & all the fans come on & I walk out of the room thinking everything's fine 🙂

Come back in the room & the monitor's not showing anything (as in Windows) . I hit the power button to turn the computer off & it would'nt , hit the restart button .......NOTHING ! . Only the switch in the back had any affect . It would instantly just power up when I flipped the switch back on . I tried again & nothing , all the fans would run , led's were working but no POST .

The PSU was a 3-4 yr old Enermax 351 btw .
Switched out the PSU with an Antec 350 "SL350" as I just bought an Antec 835II case w/psu (building a new comp) Everything booted up just fine after the switch 🙂

I recommend when you build a new sys , to not keep using the same PSU as I did . It did last almost 3 computers but it's not worth the hassle over $50.-$60.

Well Gang the problem is moot now. The lady in question bought a new power supply and when installed it did not solve her problem. I only hope she was able to return it as I told her sig. other, don't purchase it without being able to return it. Keep in mind I am working through second hand info never having talked to or met the lady. Anyway I checked and there was 3.3v to the power on switch. But nothing happens when the switch is pushed, just a green light and then shortly thereafter flashing red. I chatted on line with a Compaq techie and his answer was to take it to a Compaq service center. His first suggestion was to check the voltage selection switch on the rear of the PS, but this particular one didn't have the switch. I would guess that this indicates a bad connection at the MB or a failure of the MB. I am not sure what she plans to do, but I think she is just going to get another PC but not from QVC or some similar TV selling network. Anyway thanks for all the help and responses.
