Power Supplies

Good overall wattage, high efficiency, lots of amps on the 12V rail, and a reliable brand name with a good reputation.

I look for a brand name with a record of reliability. Then it has to be appropriate for the system in which it will find itself (power capacity, cable lengths, etc.). After that, I prefer single +12V rail over split rails. I also like to have active Power Factor Correction, and autoranging AC tolerance. Helps make your system relatively immune to line-side garbage and they usually come hand in hand. After that, reasonably low noise is good, but I'm not a Noise Nazi - if it is too noisy for me it is generally not hard to fix within my tolerance. And finally, high efficiency is good once the other bases are covered - the 80+ label denotes high efficiency. For the great majority of systems, the Enhance ENP-5140GH or 5150 will cover all those bases and leave some $$$s in your pocket.

Hey kinda off topic but still about my PSU. my -12V rail only reads -0.35V in speedfan and the -5V rail only reads -3.70V is this something I need to worry about? The other rail are fine th worst one is the 12v rail it it reads 11.90V so I'm not really worried about that one and my Vdimm is 2.11 but the BIOS is on the 1.9v option and the only other option is 1.8V

Here's the latest & greatest...

Cheap too! 😀

Heh! Jonny Guru's creaming himself, too...
I know that the only way I'd give mine up is if I went to a GPU that demanded higher numbers amperage wise, otherwise you'll get my X-Pro from me if you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Holy crap! I thought Ultra PSUs were teh sux0rs!

amps per output/line, the more the better...NOT looking at pure wattage..and, yes, good, reputable brands.

They changed OEMs. They are now using Andyson and on thier higher output models, Seventeem...IIRC.

Black69ta,

In order to be stable, switching PSU rails need to have some minimum load otherwise some less well designed circuits can float all over the map. So if your PSU has those rails (the -5 is nearly gone on current models (disappeared entirely from the latest ATX spec) and the -12 will be going away soon as nothing uses them any more, but some server boards still have ISA slots for legacy cards. If yours is such, and you make use of it/them, you may have to find a PSU with the negative voltages if the card(s) use those voltages), you can put small, dummy loads on them to stabilize them (maybe 47 ohms on the -12 and/or 22 ohms on the -5) or just ignore them as those circuits are not high current nor are they subject to self-destruction running loadless as some older high-current circuits are.

damn thats a quality PSU esp considering the price

Heh!

You 'guys' need to stay with the times... 😉

A month ago it was Zalman, with their heatpipe PSU -- this month it's Ultra, resurrected...

Next month, maybe its' Silverstone's turn, again, but I doubt it! 😀

aww shucks. my case is way too big for that PSU then....got any other ideas? (I'm going to buy it from Fry's because I have a 30 dollar gift certificate that I want to use....and it has to be B&M).

I'm definitely going to use sleeved cabling since I have a windowed case and I want >80% efficiency....

You're limiting yourself by Fry's or B&M only 😛

400~500W... Silverstone Element or Enhance ENP series.
600W... The Zalman heat piped unit or for uber-bling the Ultra X-Pro 600W.
The Ultra X-Pro *might* be found at Fry's or a B&M.

NOTE: Vin, stop flame bating please. We have gone through this with several members past and present..No names 😀

Actually, the heatpipe Zalman is still good. And it seems that FSP fixed the ripple issue:
