One of my friend wants to build himself a new power-machine ( =D ) and he wants a AMD 2200+ XP Thoroughbred core

Now I really donno what board/memory (especially memory) to suggest to him
He wants the SOYO KT333 DRAGON LITE SOCKETA KT333 board... because he like its color.. I'm not sure its a good argument.

Anyway, what Board/memory would you guys suggest?

I would suggest waiting for an nForce2 board... but if you can wait that long i would sugest ABIT AT7 MAX With some kind of DDR 2700 or a A7N266-C DDR 2100 or 2700 if you are going to over clock.

If you followed my route with this processor, and simply got a newer graphcis card, you'd be sorted...

The MSI board is a brand new board supporting USB2.0, can get RAID and 5.1 channel sound onboard if you like, but the best thing is bright red PCB, just like the SOYO's (which I was going to get) :)

Very nice processor, and DDR333 ram absolutely rules - but try and get CL2.5 or CL2 ram.

P2700C2 memory is specced for 2:3:3. Sometimes it will run at 333MHz DDR with latencies of 2:2:2... but not always, and not always reliably (may have to jump up the voltage a bit, or may just not be stable). I'd pay a bit extra and get something like the Corsair XMS3000C2. It's rated for 2:2:2 at 333MHz DDR.

How about the new Epox EP-8K5A2+? It is the newest KT333 motherboard out, and to my knowledge, the only one that uses Via's new 8235 southbridge that will come with all KT400 boards. It supports USB 2.0 and LAN.

Here's a review of it..

Epox EP-8K5A2+ @ Tbreak

how much is he spending? I grabbed a soyo kt333 dragon ultra(platinum - they were outta the non platinum ones) and it isnot the fastest, but was never more than a few fps off, and mobos aren't the big things that effect performane, they mostly govern stability and overclockability.

as for stability, you can't beat soyo. it comes with tons of cool features (mine has smart card/compact flash reader!) and onboard sound(in my case) complete with network(again, not sure about the lite)

it installed easily (insert proc, install hsf, put in ram, into case, there goes vid card, cables . ..) so that i had my first system built in about 2 hours. startup went without a hitch, and i have very rarely heard of a soyo needing to be rma'd, unlike their gigabyte counterparts.

i think the kt333 dragon lite is a great choice! mebbe doesn't have onboard sound and network, but he knows that. mine came with 3 ide cables and a floppy drive cable, even had some thermal grease for the proc! great quality, im all about soyo!

The Epox I listed with LAN, 6 USB 2.0 ports, 6 channel sound, and RAID is only ~$100 @ Mwave... :)

Does that board support the internal diode of the XP CPU's?

The Epox 8K5A2+ looks definitly like an execellent choice... and I found a SAMSUNG 512MB PC2700 DDR333 for a great price.. I think it would be an awesome machine.

But hes going to buy that in a few weeks maybe.. so it is possible that the Nforce2 would be released and would be exellent.. (who knows)
AND..
He would buy either a radeon 8500 or even a 9700 (if it is released, depending on prices availability etc..). And a radeon 9700 is AGP8x right?.. the board is 4x.. I KNOW, agp4x and agp8x will give mostly the same performance, but it is a bit dissapointing to buy an AGP8x card when your mobo is only AGP4x (damn)

AFAIK, the KT400 will be the first Athlon chipset to support AGP 8X. I'm not sure when the Nforce2 will be coming, but it seems like it's been due for awhile..the last I heard they were due in the retail channel sometime around mid September. I have a feeling the KT400 will also be out around then too...:)
