Looking at what is on the horizon in the next few months, what kind of power do you think will be needed to run an X2, R520 (dual slot), Crossfire system? 600+?

Well, the X2 will consume about as much power as a current Clawhammer IIRC (130nm 1MB cache chips).
No idea about the R520. If it uses 90nm tech, that gives it a 50% die size vs the current 130nm cards, but I'm not sure how much less power the 90nm will lead to.
R520 will probably be a bit more power hungry than current cards, but not much more I wouldn't expect (because ATi wouldn't want it to consume too much power, bad idea if they want to sell the damned thing).
For SLI I would guess you'd need a decent 400W+ PSU.

With the R520 being dual-slot, that should draw more power even with 90nm tech right? So put two of those in your rig along with X2...you really think you can run all that with only 400W?

Depends on your definition of high end. Right now, my system is equiped with 17 X 400GB drives. That should be "high end". It is in my definitions. It also draws *ALOT* of power. But it is a workstation.

If you're thinking about a high end gaming system, future systems will probably be best off with a 460W+ PSU from a reputable company.

depends too much on what else you have, ocing, temps etc.

i'd rather go higher as if you get a good unit it will last through multiple upgrades.

Yes, I'm talking about high end gaming. I'm surprised that people think power consumption will be under 500, but if so that is cool with me! :)

wattage shuttle 240W psu is far superior then any generic 600W psu. its not all about the wattage you know. the shuttle 240W can handle the top of the line X2, x850 xt pe, 2gb ram, 2 hd's, optical drive, sound card, and etc. has it been done? yes. not with x2, but x2 doesnt use up much juice at all and still runs less power then existing intel cpus by far.
