Power requirement for a 6800 GT

My system is the following:

Athlon xp 1700+ @ 2.1ghz
1 Gig PC2700 RAM
250gig Western Digtal HD
160gig Maxtor HD
NEC 2510 DVD-Writer
Wireless NIC
Philips 604 Soundcard
(2) 120mm case fans
BFGTech 6800GT

All that on a 350watt Antec 350watt Powersupply that came with my Antec 3200 Quite Case. No probs just to give you a rough power idea.

There is a common misconception of the PSU.

Most computers won't even draw 250 watts of power.

What matters are stable, powerful rails. The video card uses the 6V rail, I think, so you have to check if that's consistent.

Good PSU brands (with stable rails) include OCZ's Powerstream series, FORTRON PSUs, and Antec True Power series.
 
Thanks, that's what I figured. I'm guessing NVidia states the large wattage is needed to cover their ass. I'm sure if one were using a cheap PS, the extra wattage would likely be necessary.
 
I'm running a 6800 ultra, AMD64 3000 and a couple drives off a 300W power supply with no problems. It's a seasonic with 18A on the 12V line and a very stable output, which I think makes all the difference.
The 6800 actually pull most of their power from the 12V rail, not the 5V, so make sure you have enough juice on the 12.
