Power prob

I have a A7V8X-X, 2500xp CPU,512 2700 Geil, on a win 98 install. I built this pc for a customer several weeks ago. All was fine until the third week when the pc suddenly shut down while running. I advised him to boot into safe-mode first then go back into normal windows. This worked only a couple of times. After a while the pc would only boot into safe-mode so I thought the fresh install was corrupt. To confirm this I put my harddrive into his pc that has win2k server on it......same config as his so all workedon first boot up then I had the same power problem that he did. Pc boots into safe-mode or boots up and then shuts off woth the power light still on only. The only way you can restart it is turning pc off with swotch or turning the PS off.

I did another fresh install with a new HD and now 2 weeks later it is doing the same thing again. Any ideas out there.

YOu mean it was fine for 2 weeks after the new HDD?

Sounds like something might be corrupting data on the drive...

The two things that come to mind are, you may have a bad power supply or component (vid card, etc.), or possibly both drives have the same virus.

Try it with a new Antec or Enermax, 300W+, and see what it does.

Ok I forgot to add that I have tried 2psu 2 cpu's 4 sticks of RAM. also have you guys ever seen one boot up and say ATAPI cd rom then just underneath it "no emulation" ????????? with nothing plugged in except the cdrom. I bought 3 of these boards and they all say the say thing but this one has issues. I ran memtest86 for 16hrs and only got 70 errors.

if windows will not boot up all the way you could say it was a corrupt install or even a virus.....I could get into safe mode every time but not the full gui. you can be using the pc or just letting it set there and BAM it shuts off although the power light stays on.

I scanned for viruses multiple times too.

once again after you put in the new HDD did the computer run fine for two weeks and then start turning off or did it start turning off right after you put the new HDD in?
