Power over coax?

I bought a signal booster for my house and it arrived today.

To my surprise there is a coax input on the unit labeled "Power 12Vdc" and it came bundled with a standard AC/DC two-prong adapter but it doesn't have a power cable attached to it. Instead it has a coax input. I guess I am supposed to run coax from the AC/DC adapter to the signal booster power input?

Anyone know if this is ok? This makes me think of that other thread where the dude hooked 120v power to his neighhors coax line and burned the house across the street down... 🙂

Hmm, I have never heard of running power through coax before. Did it come with an instruction manual?

Nope... Bought it off of ebay. I am currently looking for a manual online.

It is a Motorola brand and feels high quality...

On a related topic I just learned US residential power was 120v... I always thought it was 110v

🙂

From what I can find online, it uses an RF cable for power.

People at this link talk about hooking it up..try reading through these.

Those reviews look pretty good, I couldn't find a better one out there where I was looking. I did read many people thought it would increase their cable modem speeds which is stupid and may be a reason for the lower rating.

I just want to increase the overall signal to my entire house so I am going to be installing it at the line coming in. The power thing just threw me...

Yup. We use similar setups for the internet service I work for. The ones I use are inline though and provide power to a similar device.

These are really common in cable installs - the booster may be far from the 120v outlet and cable installers can run coax (or already have it run) much more easily than an extension cord. Just use standard 75ohm coax cable.

Do it all the time for DTV installs (5x8 and 6x8 multiswitches pull 24 volts). Do use RG6 and not RG59 cable though.

WTT

P.S. All Sat dishes run power to the dish using the coax lines (13 & 18 volts for DTV, 18 for Dish, 18 for Dway and 24 & 30 for Wildblue)
