ok ive been tinkering w/ oc'ing everything lately and i have a Thermaltake 420watt Purepower w/ only a 19A 12v rail.... im running two Maxtor 160Gb SATA drives in raid a 3000+Winchester that runs at 1.8stock and if i get bored it runs at 2.35GHz, 1Gb of DDR400 ram that i run at about DDR 436 and a X800GTO2 that i run at 16pipes and 525/600 on a ASRock Dual939 SATA2 oh and i have a 16x DVD drive and a 52x CDRW along w/ a Gigabyte 3dRocket CPU Cooler and 3 120mm Antec TriCool Fans and one Thermaltake Thunderblade 120mm on a Fanbus.

is this to much for my wimpy 420 or should i try getting something like this http://www.xoxide.com/sunbeam-nuuo-550w-psu-black.html

A good quality PSU rated at 400W (probably even a 350W) or so would be fine for your rig. Sorry to say but the Thermaltake PSU's are generally regarded as just above the ones that come in the $15 cases. If you want cheap, the E-power Puma II is supposedly made by by the same folks as the OCZ units and costs ~$45. If you want something a little nicer than I'd go look at all the posts over in Cases and Cooling about this subject. There are a few reputable manufacturers out there that are worth buying from.

Get a fortron AX450, or similar model. These PSUs are very high quality (speaking from experience here), and should be plenty for your needs.

I have a system with an overclocked dual core Opteron, 4 hard drives, a cdrom drive, etc. etc. My PSU also has a power meter. At idle it shows about 150W. At full steam it shows about 250W.

Running Opteron 144 at 2700MHz and a 146 at 3000MHz in HTPC systems that only have 200w-220w cheap power supplies (FSP-Group) included with Athenatech A100 cases. ATi x800 PCIe in the 3GHz system, other uses onboard x300. All include DL burners, gig of ram, DVB-S PCI tuner card (which also must power a dish motor from it's PCI slot), USB NIC, USB OTA HDTV, single HD, and 3 case fans. Never any issues. Build and sell these to family and friends. Plus always have at least 5 systems running at all times here for bi-weekly LAN parties. So the 200w power requirment is not a one time fluke, but a fact of everyday life.

Only time I had a PS fail that pissed me off was when my Antec Aria 300w took a dump (real POS). Back to cheap and happy again.

Another vote for fortron/FSP/sparkle...they are pretty affordable compared to the other quality brands as well.
