Power Locks - WTF - Toyota Sienna 2008

I have a problem that I can not solve. I think this is a setting somewhere where I don't know how it was set. Looking over the manual, it seems they have alot of strange sequences to toggle settings.

All problems are identical with the power lock switch on the door and the remote control.

The lock functions works fine. Locking locks all doors including the hatch (back door) works fine.

The unlock function will however only open the driver side door and rear hatch. The passenger door remains locked along with the two sliding doors. The one power sliding door we have works fine once unlocked.

How did this happen and how do I fix it?

If you hit 'unlock' on the remote twice (with a second or so delay in between presses), will it unlock all the doors?

No.

At first I thought the remote battery was low on the remote. But then the same problem occurs if I press the unlock button that is built into the driver side door. That stumped me.

hmm that's what I would have guessed. It's pretty standard option for power locks. You get to choose between all the doors unlocking or just driver's.

I've got a Sienna. The unlock settings are weird, and we got that issue once. Don't remember how we changed it, but it took some time looking at the poorly-written manual.

I thought I found it in this:
Insert key into ignition, set to on. Unlock driver door by hand. Then press unlock button on door.

Seriously strange way of setting things. But I tried what I thought was the solution and it did not work. Or i did it wrong since the way they bullet things is beyond strange.

Could you look into your manual and see if you can recall what the fix is.

Thanks.

Check the contacts on the sliding doors, they can get a little bit of tarnish or corrosion on them and cause goofy problems.

Toyota diagnosed it as my car needing 3 new actuators to the tune of $2000. My jaw hit the floor. This was litterally, open doors, go into restaurant. Walk out of restaurant and all 3 doors stop unlocking. I have a suspicion that they didn't take hte door panels off and investigate.

I think I'll take it to another place for an opinion. This is a loose contact or broken wire or something somewhere.

Please look at the link I posted. The chances of 3 actuators going bad at the exact same time are very slim. Your problems, based on what others who have had similar issues found, is Inside The Drivers Door, either at the connectors or the Lock Module itself. Below is an excerpt from that link:

Just a guess .... but there could be a conductivity problem in connector IH2, which is located at the front of the driver side door panel. .... So, remove the interior door panel, and locate the connector ... towards the front of the door .... see p. 42 of the Gen 3 wiring diagram .... online repair manual. Disconnect the connector, clean with contact cleaner spray and small brush, reassemble. .... Maybe rain or car wash dripped down and caused a bad connection. Not completely sure about this .... is there anything else that you can provide as far as 'symptoms? A lot of related posts are mentioning broken wires in the area of the driver door hinge... so keep a look out for anything like that.

Bruce and SDIFox,

Yes. But should I take this explanation to the same dealer and tell them to pull the door apart and investigate.

I can see it already. They'd charge me for new actuators (assuming i do get new ones). That does not fix the problem and they investigate more and it is some loose wire. Bill to me is $2K for a wire.

How hard is it to get door panels off and put them on? Do I need any special tools?

if it is under warranty, it should not cost you anything.

Take it to someone else, and don't mention what the first guys said. Get a second diagnosis.

I suppose it's possible that 3 actuators failed at the same time, but I would never bet any money on it.

You should not need more than a Phillips and Regular tip screwdriver and maybe a socket wrench. Some screws may be under little plastic covers that will need to be popped off. On some cars, they may use Torx head screws, in which case you need that bit or screwdriver. Once all the screws are off, just pry the panel loose, starting at the bottom edge, then the sides. When it is free, lift up to clear the window channel. Disconnect any connectors (carefully) going to the switches on the door. The door will have a plastic covering the inside parts, to keep water out. Be sure it is put back correctly. You can also post over at the forum for Toyota (which is at that link above). I am sure someone there can give specifics or maybe even a link to download the Service Manual for your car.

My Sienna is 2011 so it may not work the same as yours.

On mine, to switch between unlocking modes, the ignition has to be off, you hold the unlock and lock buttons on the remote simultaneously for about five seconds. There should be some sort of beep.

One of the unlocking modes is similar to what you describe.

Hope this helps a bit.

I'll give it a shot. And if it works, I'm never going back to the dealership. I was almsot thinking that if there were a way to reset the CPU to default settings, that might fix it. Anyone know how to do that? Disconnect battery over night?
