Power/Energy saving features in linux...

Booty

What are my options here? I've been having 3 computers running 24/7 at my house for a couple months, and never had power saving features enabled before since utilities were included in my previous apartments' rent. Now that I'm getting the electric bill, I figured I should save some where I can.

Took me 2 seconds using google. 😛

Discription of power managment options

Never used power managment that much personally, generally laptop users care most about it, obviously. 🙂

ACPI support is still kinda flaky. Some hardware doesn't like it, and even in 2.6 the don't have it quite right. sometimes can cause lockups...

APM is more mature, but not as nice.

Yeah, I googled it too... just thought I'd come here for some more hands-on opinions. Thanks for your $.02. 😀

For desktops the only power management worth worrying about is the display, which is handled well by DPMS either in XF86Config or by xscreensaver. The rest of the box at idle barely burns up any power at all. The little you would save by using standby modes and spinning down drives is likely less than you would pay in replacing parts due to increased wear and tear from powering up and down more frequently.
