Power cable wire for wire trick on Northwood 1.6a?

My boss and I are looking to do the wire trick mod on our Northwood 1.6a . . . all we can find right now that is conductive is power cables (4-pin connectors from a power supply). I spliced the red cable and am considering using the silvery wire from that - should that work fine? We don't have any speaker wire around right now...

as long as it is thread thin. there is very thin copper wire in any old phone cord.

Well, it worked. However, the added voltage doesn't seem to be doing much... 🙁
