Potential new Star Trek Series on Kickstarter

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/145553614/star-trek-renegades?ref=home_popular

Sounds pretty solid. A lot of old Trek stars have already signed onto the case.

Renegades, as the name suggests, will be bold, edgy and a little dark:

It is nearly ten years after Voyager’s return from the Delta Quadrant, and the Federation is in a crisis. The planet Reuel VII, the Federation’s main supply of dilithium crystals, has essentially vanished. Space and time has folded around Reuel VII, effectively isolating it from any contact with outside worlds. And this phenomenon is not natural – someone or something has caused this to happen.

This necessitates drastic measures; some of which are outside the Federation’s jurisdiction. For this, Admiral Pavel Chekov, head of Starfleet Intelligence, turns to Commander Tuvok, Voyager’s former security officer and current head of the newly reorganized Section 31. Tuvok must put together a new covert, renegade crew - mostly outcasts and rogues - even criminals. This new crew is tasked with finding out what caused the folding of time and space around Reuel, and stopping it – at all costs – from happening to their final source of energy. But will they be able to put aside their differences and stop trying to kill one another in time to accomplish their mission?

^^^ To my understanding that's the plot their planning for the pilot, not the whole series. Sounds intriguing, if a bit "been there, done that". Not sure if I think this is the best option for the next series, but I'm all for anything that could bring Star Trek back in a decent form. Haven't donated yet, but I probably will. 😛

Only one problem I see with it, ok two.
1. Chekov would be almost 200 years old by the time Voyager made its way back to Alpha quadrant.
2. Tuvok wasn't that interesting of a character.

The other problem is: nothing happens regarding the Star Trek universe without Roddenberry's family and estate signing on, and if they sign on you don't need Kickstarter.

1. Starfleet medical advances. Come on, standard solution to anything in Star Trek is technobabble.
2. To each his own. Tuvok was one of the primary redeeming traits of Voyager IMO. He's no Picard, but he's enough to hold interest.

<NERD ALERT>

143 years old if the series takes place in 2388.

Doesn't sound like a good story line to me. Dilithium crystals aren't the source of power anyways, matter and anti-matter reactions are. The crystals are what allows the ship to harness that energy and in the 24th century dilithium crystals can be recrystalized so the ship doesn't have to replace them very often.

</NERD ALERT>

Besides... I would so much rather a movie adaptation of David Mack's "Destiny" book series be made. Throw some money at the TNG actors for one last movie. Stewart looked pretty fucking good on the Daily Show the other night.

3. Why would they need a "covert, renegade crew of outcasts and criminals" to figure this out?

so it's like voyager with the maquis crew, but 100x worse with more focus on personal/emo drama. let's call it startrek universe

I'd actually love a series about the maquis. And bold, edgey and dark doesn't have to be emo and stupid ala Stargate Universe.

Perhaps they suspect the Klingons have something to do with it, but don't want to implicate their allies direclty. So they need an undercover team to figure things out.

It's plausible.

you saying they don't have a covert team that could handle something like this already? Seems like a army like Starfleet would. The need for a "covert, renegade crew of outcasts and criminals" seems almost counter Starfleet.

This.

There are a lot of Kickstarter projects where I'm left wondering, "Why do they need our money? What are you really getting? What are the actual chances of this coming to fruition, even if the goal is met?"

Also. $200,000? It's not actually that much money, especially as far as film production is concerned. I'm assuming that's what they need to scrape together a pilot episode in order to make a pitch to Paramount. I always wonder about Kickstarters that set a relatively small goal amount because if you reach the goal, you keep the money. If you don't, you give it back. And there's no guarantee that $200k will actually make this more likely to happen. It comes down to if Paramount wants to do this and thinks it will be successful. A few thousand nerds donating money online won't be enough to convince them, and $200k isn't enough to put even a small dent in what they'd need to spend in order to make this happen.

I just don't trust this at all. Must as I'd love to see new Star Trek stuff, especially a TV series that takes place in the "prime" timeline, this seems unrealistic. Not to mention the premise is silly, but it is Star Trek after all and I can look past that.

That sounds awful. Any plot that relies on the cast "putting aside their differences" is a huge red flag for me because of the lack of reality. If you were planning the most important mission ever, why would you put together a crew for that had strong odds of never even getting to the place in question because they hate each other? They would be selected like the Apollo crews: The most stable, cool-as-ice people the universe had to offer.

All that said, if anyone has seen Walter Koenig play Alfred Bester in Babylon 5, you know that the guy can be sinister and commanding as hell if given the proper role. Be fun to see a dark Chekov at work.

I just hate when they get old star trek actors to play in the new shows and movies and Pavel Checkov I just despise that actor in real life he's a bitter old man. Maybe the should bring back Sulu to go prancing around the star ship like Klinger on Mash.

I didn't even like Lenard Nemoy in the lastest Star Trek movie but I like all the new actors in that star trek universe. This franchise should focus on them.

They killed Data in the last movie so he won't be back if they stick to the same timeline. Or someone can build another "Data" like Lore or etc. but Brent Spiner is pretty old looking.

Well there was another data they had in that movie and the transfer caused it to start doing more of the original data stuff at the end.

They can do much better then Spinner playing Data, it's robot, anybody could play that part. In Andromeda they had hot ladies as robots, that would be better. Spinner had his pinochio carreer.
