This is what we used to call a potato bug...

There we go!!
Precisely!

we call that a rolley polley

Rolley Polleys are big fuzzy caterpillars, though I can see how the name more aptly fits the pill bug.

Around here, "pillbug", "sowbug", and "rolley polley" are interchangeable.

That's why common names suck.

We have them in Northern California... not very many of them, though. I might see 1 per year at most, and I've enver seen one inside a building, always outside. I don't know where else they live.

I don't think that's all that scary. And up around here, what we call potato bugs are biggish yellow-orange beetles.

A potato bug is not a cricket. It's like 3 inches long and much uglier.

They looks pretty similar: http://insects.tamu.edu/images/insects/color/mcrick1.html vs http://www.potatobugs.com/

There's no doubt that they're related, so I'll just lump them both together 😉

I was waiting for someone to link to a pic of one of these. Man, I can't even get close to the dead one's in museums. Those things are monsters.
We've got those bad boys here in Cancun. Well, in the jungles, not in the hotel zone. They are awesome critters.

Q: I have potato bugs in my vegetable garden. How can I rid myself of these pesky critters?
A: Drench your entire yard with gasoline and set it ablaze. Once the fire has burned itself out and the ground has cooled, cultivate the soil to a depth of seven feet, saturate the area with battery acid and top the surface with gasoline. After a few minutes, most of the surviving potato bugs, now irritated, will burrow up for air. Set the yard on fire again, and let it burn itself out. The remaining bugs should be crisped. Add water. Only then, and only maybe, will you rid yourself of potato bugs.

Q: When I sleep, I have recurring dreams about potato bugs. Nightmares, really. Should I be concerned?
A: No. We all have nightmares about potato bugs. Try not to drink alcohol right before bed.

Q: Does alcohol consumption increase the chances of potato bug nightmares?
A: No. Potato bugs are drawn to the smell of alcohol, so when you drink late at night they?re more likely to infest your bed. They may gnaw your cheeks while you sleep, trying to get at the smell of the alcohol on your breath.

Q: Do potato bugs eat potatoes?
A: Potato bugs eat your cheeks.

Q: I caught a potato bug in a field behind my house, and now its my pet. How do I sex it?
A: Just e-mail us your name and address, and we?ll notify the proper authorities about you. You should be locked up.

LOL 😀faq

That is just silly.

Whatever you call it, that thing in the top post is scary as hell. It seems like 10 of those could easily overtake a person... especially with their shovel resistant armour.... Seriously.... those give me the creeps. I've never seen such a thing.

You must have girly arms.

Camel Spider ownz all these girlie bugs.

Camel spider pwning a scorpion.

This page debunks some myths about the Camel Spider, but proffers the following data:

Don't piss one off, Camel Spiders can run 10MPH. Can you?

Camel spiders are nocturnal, when they do come out in the day they have followed people to stay in their shadow.

Although the rumors of "eating the faces off of sleeping G.I.'s in the desert" are bogus, they do hunt for stuff for their burrows and there have been numerous reports of people finding these things in their hair when they wake up.

Considering these things have teeth like this... the potato bug doesn't really concern me much 😉
