Put it together a week ago and solid so I guess Ill reveal the works:

1 Gig Thunderbird
MSI pro 2A Motherboard
256 M Micron PC-133 ram
IBM Deskstar 7200 rpm ata-100 30G Hard drive
HP 9100i R/W CD-ROM
Antec sx1030b case w/300 watt P/S
ATI Radon 32 M DDR Video card
other minor goodies.

Only problem to date: a dead heatsink fan for which I had to wait 5 days for a replacement.

Any Comments or suggestions?

Now I can NEF really fast. :D

Yeah, EA-

But didnt you also get a 19" monitor?

Guess that is next for me, stuck now with my 17: Sony 200 :D Not a bad way to be stuck.

Bought everything mailorder from about 5 different sources:

Onvia
Spartan Technologies
TWCO
Mwave

Good experiences with all but some faster than others.

Agree with you.

Felt I did pretty good pricewise with a little peace of mind if I needed to return anything. Put about $900 into my above system without the cd burner. A LOT better than the mystery boxes from the OEMs.

Could have done a lot cheaper with a little compromise but I wanted specific items.

Promise to do even better next time.

<< (who needs those kiddie Gamer Video cards?) >>

Kiddie gamers need kiddie gamer video cards- what a stupid question.

;)

I have a G400 MAX that is still kicking ass. I rarely game any more (I have better things to do with my time now- such as a girl :) :) :) :) :)) so if I have ass whooping 2d, I'm a happy camper!

The choice of a video card was my hardest decision. I do most things in 2d but do like a game now and then as well as my flight simulator. Raedon may not be perfect but has to be better than my 8M ati expert 98 with the rage pro turbo chip. Also have an ATI all in wonder 8M board.

Raedon less likely to be outdated quickly also so I gave it a shot. Still to new to tell if Im right or not. Matrox has my vote for pure 2d though and the rest of the cards just too pricey for my uses.

Yes, toss the 32meg Radeon and get a 64meg version.

Also, I don't see Ultra 160 SCSI on your machine? I would never run a personal workstation without 10k RPM hard drives on a 160 controller.

But, I have a sponsor for my HW.

JSM-

Lucky for you you have a sponsor. All of my hardware comes out of my back pocket so I have to be a LITTLE bit picky at least :D

Pretty happy with the ata-100 IBM HD for now. That is almost overkill for me as it is. Next step would be a raid setup with another IBM drive. Fastest neffing in the known world.

Thought about W2K but 98SE with all the downloads and tweaks works pretty good for me. Hate to spend money on an OS until it offers something I really need. Do play a few games but with only a 56k dial up got pretty sick of being fragged by someone I never saw. Maybe roadrunner in a few months or so or the like. Besides I have about 6-8 expensive books on win98 and still havent exhausted them :D

Have a great holiday if I dont post to you before.

got a PII-400 we could maybe talk about :D

How about a 586-133? 32M ram, 33.6 modem 1G hard drive and all the goodies with a 15: monitor.

thebestMAX's used computer/car lot is open for business.

Windogg, your system in your sig sounds awesome, but the question is CL geforce 2 ultra don't come with DVI out. So how have you connected the NEC 21 inch LCD to your ultra card. :)
