You have the CPU speed necessary, this is one of those test that seems to like raw mhz, have to get most AMD systems above 2.2ghz to play it without driopping frames. A few seem to managed on XP3200+ or A64 3000+ but what about their systems is helping it I can't say. FW on is a must. P4 HT enabled systems 2.4ghz or higher seem to have no trouble and can do other things at the same time. IQ comparisons without serious side-by-side analysis are largely subjective so no comment there 🙂

I got 70-75% cpu usage w/ step into liquid. My desktop is 1600 x 1200 32bit color. Running win2ksp4 w/ 61.77 drivers..

I guess my 6800GT doesn't work correctly also. Am I supposed to change resolution ?

Jose

Well guys, last night I installed WinXP64 RC1 and used ATI Catalyst Beta 2 drivers for my X800 Pro. They included WMV Acceleration (nominally). So, I fired up Step Into Liquid 1080p and gave it a look. Here is what I noticed:

1. CPU load was 60-75% (vs. 90+ in WinXP32 with the same hardware)
2. There was not one single hitch/glitch/asynch frame. It was....liquid. For the first time ever.

So, there you have it.

ps - The default WMV in WinXP64 is WM10. As it should have been in WinXP SP2.

Which 32bit drivers do you use brudda? I was expecting around 55-60% with that card.

Cat 4.11 is what I used in WinXP Pro x32 DP. I don't think ATI has officially "turned on" the acceleration, either that or M$ hasn't flipped the switch in WMP yet.

But I'll take a 20-30% increase in performance any day.

I don't know how disimilar the X700 line is from your card beyond interface but look at the awesomely low usage it has Text The 6800GT sticks out like a sore  I am almost beginning to think it has something to do with the PCIe interface though I can't see how that can be? 😕 Someone school me please.

Yep, you have the CPU speed necessary even without HT, but the test should be run with MP9 or 10 since that is what we were basing on CPU usage and playback experiences from 🙂 Regardless, any owner of a P4 system of 2.4ghz or better is probably not going to have playback issues with the WMV HD 1080 content but from what I have seen so far many A64 2ghz and XP3200+ owners and below who don't get help from the vid card will not be happy.

What program are you guys using to view this? I am using Media Player 9 and it appears to be a slide show. I cant even hear sound in MP9. I tired viewing in VLC but that didnt work. I tried viewing it in premiere, same situation. What the hell is going on?

Zero dropped frames with my wife's new computer. The SIL trailer looks beautiful played full screen on her new Dell 2005FPW monitor, too. I swear I could count the freckles on the blond chick's face. Incredibly crisp video with lots of detail.

Windows MP10
"Use high quality mode" selected
1680x1050 desktop resolution
P4 550 with HT enabled on 915PBL
1024MB of Dual Channel PC4200 DDR2
Sapphire X300 PCIe graphics w/ WMV acceleration enabled in latest Cats.
Seagate 7200.7 SATA hard drive w/ NCQ

Another case of the P4 getting by with sheer horsepower, most likely. Although I wonder if the WMV HD playback benefits any from the graphics card's faster PCIe interface. If enabling fast writes helps, you'd think the faster x16 interface would also make a difference. Hopefully, once the NF4 boards are available some people will be able to compare the WMV HD performance of AGP vs. PCIe using the A64s. Of course by the the PVP will hopefully be working on the 6-series cards and it'll all be a moot point.

The same settings brought my own system to its knees when I tried it on with the flat panel at native resolution. Hundreds of dropped frames. With my CRT that is set at only 1152x864, it only dropped 58 frame, but the video looked kinda fuzzy so it probably was scaling the footage down to fit the screen (thus the higher frame rate).

Specs on the older machine:

AXP 2500+@2.2GHz on A7N8X-Deluxe
512MB PC3200 RAM Single Channel
FireGL 8800
WD1200JB hard drive

AMD Athlon64 3500+
1024MB of Crucial Ballistix PC3200
Club-3D Radeon X800 XT (softmodded to XT PE @ 520/560)

I used Media Player Classic. Smooth video and sound playback (no dropped frames) with CPU usage varying between 60% - 90%. The most surprising thing was that I had a rather smooth video playback (bit slow, but still smooth), but stuttering sound playback when FastWrite was off. When I turned it on, everything was perfectly smooth and fast. 🙂

batmanuel, could you check the CPU usage with both systems and post them please? Turn off HT for the P4 too if you don't mind. I liked to see what the CPU percentage is on that X300 system.

Leonharty, Thank you for posting you results  Yet more evidence fastwrites makes a difference in playback performance.

CPU usage was pegged at 100% on the AXP system, and when I disabled HT on the P4 system it actually would spike up to 100% in some parts of SIL and would start dropping frames. With HT enabled, though, the CPU usage stayed around 60%.

Not sure it's interesting, but here are my results on linux (2.6.7) system with mplayer (1.0pre5-3.3.4):

While benchmarking "mplayer -fs -nosound -benchmark <clip>" is used (sound disabled)
{clip, real length in seconds / time taken to play in seconds while benching, cpu load when playing normal speed w sound}
Coral_Reef_Adventure_1080.wmv, 105/66, 58%
Dolphins_1080.wmv, 111/68, 56%
Robotica_1080.wmv 20/11, 52%

P4 2.6@3.12Ghz HT + 5700LE 256MB

Ran the trailer smooth as silk, no dropped frames. I tried with HT, without HT, enabled WMV Acceleration, Disabled WMV acceleration, full screen, running the movie @ default resolution, and running the movie @ 2048x1536. All ran perfectly with no frames dropped. It would appear, though, that WMV acceleration has no effect.

Media Player 10
Intel Pentium 4-E 3.4 @ 4.0
Gecube ATI Radeon X300 256mb
1024mb DDR2 Corsair XMS2 TwinX PC5400 running Dual-Channel
200gb Western Digital 7200RPM 8mb cache

Ran the flight one and stormchasers, those ran nice and smooth with about 90% CPU usage.

Step into liquid brought my system to its knees..it would show maybe 10 frames, then stop for a second, repeat..

I've got an AthlonXP2800+, 512MB, and onboard video 😱

In the PureVideo article on the front page it is mentioned that with the ATi cards, WMV hardware acceleration doesn't work with MP10/WMV9 right now. WMV acceleration is even disabled in the latest Cats, at least until MS issues a patch for MP10.

At the beginning of this thread I was on a 5900 and AXP about 50% CPU zero dropped frames use now look at this.

lol. This situation is so ridiculous I can only laugh. Zebo, maybe you should try underclocking much as possible. 🙂

So i don't get it. Everyone is dropping frames cause they don't have enough CPU power. I downloaded both the 720P and 1080P and they both look perfect, no frames dropped.

i get about 55% cpu usage

You're using a Pentium IV with HyperThreading support. In other words, one "half" of your CPU is fully loaded and the other isn't. Hence 50 - 55% in your case. Disable HT and see for yourself what we're talking about. 😉

Ok, perhaps this has already been discussed, perhaps not. But tonight I rented the Step Into Liquid DVD set from Blockbuster. I played the WMVHD DVD on my system using WMP10 and average CPU usage was about 30%, playback was perfect and smooth, not one hitch or glitch. I then played the same trailer that this entire thread centered around and the average CPU usage was still up around 70-75% with the occassional stutter. How can this be? I mean, in both cases all the same drivers (video, IDE, sound) are being used, the only difference is the source of the video. 😕

On an aside, what an awesome movie guys. I really need to get back into the water.
