How is your hard drive partitioned?

Here is my setup. Sizes are according to Windows Explorer values.

2.86GB C: Windows2000 Boot (FAT32)
2.86GB D: Programs (FAT32)
7.60GB E: Games (FAT32)
7.60GB F: Storage (FAT32)
7.60GB G: Music (FAT32)
--------------------------------
30GB Maxtor DM+ 7200

4.87GB C:\ WinMe/Applications
14.1GB E:\ Games
------------------------------------------
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40

38.2GB D:\ Storage
------------------------------------------
Quantum Fireball Plus AS

All FAT32

Mixxen: I used to be like you, having tons of partitions on my systems. at least 5 partitions on regular system. However nowadays, I try to keep my partition number lower, like 2 or 3 partitions depending on usage.

My example partition:
c:\winnt 5GB
d:\games 5GB
e:\all other files 20GB

or
c:\winnt 10GB
d:\all other files 35GB

Well, it all depends on your need and preference really. but setting up more than one partition definetely helps

I just eliminated 4 partitions the other day. I hate partitions. You end up with wasted space at the end of each, that if combined would be one more game or something. I know use folders instead. The partitions I elimnated were on the second HD. Next time I reformat the main drive I plan to make one small partion for the OS, and no other partions.

I don't know why people need 20G+ hard drives, CD-R and Tape drive are ideal for long time data storage. My partition status:
Cheetah 18XL 18.4G
C: 2GB NTFS Win2000 Pro
D: 4GB NTFS Programs
E: 4GB NTFS Temp Data Storage
F: 7.4GB NTFS Empty

15 Gig --Win ME
35 Gig --Mp3, video, programs
10 Gig --Misc. stuffs ===================> IBM 60 Gig 7200 rpm
30 Gig --Misc. stuffs ===================> Maxtor 30 gig 5400rpm (if anyone want this one, I can trade if you guy want. i don't really need it as you can see so a good video for the same value is cool with me) hehe..🙂

I have only two partitions:

10GB for WinME (gaming purposes mainly, plus more multimedia aspects)
30GB for Win2000 Pro (my main usage operating system)

Maybe one day if I convert to NTFS, I may combine the last two partitions. But 7.6GB keeps the cluster size to 4KB on a FAT32 partition.

I like to keep higher priority files on the outer tracks of the hard drive, thus the OS and programs are in front and the music is in the back 🙂. This makes defragging painless and ghost images smaller.

On my 30 gig IBM deskstar 75 gxp:
c:\ fat16 - 1 gb
d:\ ntfs - 10 gb
e:\ fat32 - 10 gb
f:\ fat32 - 8.5 gb
g:\ fat16 - .5 gb - swap partition

I don't think I've found the ideal arrangement yet but here the way my HDD is currently partitioned.

C:\ FAT-32, 4.07GB --> Win98SE
D:\ FAT-32, 4.61GB --> Win2K
E:\ FAT-32, 6.78GB --> Programs & Applications
F:\ FAT-32, 6.84GB --> Games
G:\ FAT-32, 19.7GB --> Multimedia Files

C:\ Win2k 13GB (NTFS) IBM 22GXP (7200/66)
D:\ Storage 30GB (FAT32) Quantum Fireball LM Plus (7200/66)

IBM 75GXP 30.7G (unformatted size):

C: 18.4G formatted - Win98, applications, mp3's, downloads
D: 10.1G formatted - Games, utilities, fixed swap file

(2) 30GB 75GXP's in Raid 0

c:\ Win 2K boot (NTFS) 2.86GB
d:\ Programs 54.3GB

3gig C: Win2k
2gig D: Win98se
5gig E: Programs
10gig F: Games
5gig G: Download
4gig H: Leftover
11gig I: Music
1.5gig J: CD #1
1.5gig K: CD #2
14 gig L: VCD

Lesse.. all are 5gig partitions:

C: Win98
D: Games
E: Music (more .mod/.it/.s3m than .mp3 actually)
F: Other media files
G: My media projects

Then i've got another 5gig in a linux partition that's prolly gonna go away soon. Love the os, but i game more than anything else. Got sick of rebooting constantly and have about given up on it.

jello.
aka aron.

2 x 40GB HDDs:

C:\ = ~40GB partition NTFS containing OS and applications and so on

D:\ = ~40GB partition NTFS containing backups, MP3, VOBs and everything else

/B

30 gig Maxtor:

C:\ 7.2 gig Win98 SE OS partition, other system programs like diskkeeper ect.
D:\ 10.6 gig Games partition
E:\ 10.6 gig Non system apps like Word, Front Page, Photo Suite ect.

8.4 gig WD:

F:\ 8.4 gig Achive drive, contains all my downloads and backup drivers, internet only programs.

Also have installed Win98SE also on F:\ . If the Maxtor should fail for any reason I can change it to a master drive and be up n' running in no time flat, with all my driver backups.

Maxtor 40 gig 7200 rpm

c:\ 40 gig

Maxtor 40 gig 5400 rpm

d:\ 40 gig

hehe, to many drives get confusin especially since i have 2 cdrw, a cdrom, and a dvd drive

2 30GB 75GXP's in RAID(0)

C: 2GB ~ DOS, WIN2K Swap File (FAT16)
D: Plextor 1210 (CDRW)
E: Toshiba SD-M1401 (DVD-SCSI)
F: 4GB ~ WIN2K (NTFS)
G: 17.5GB ~ Programs (CAD, CDR, Office type) (NTFS)
H: 17.5GB ~ Programs (Games & Net) (NTFS)
I: 17.5GB ~ DATA (NTFS)
J: ZIP100 (Atapi)

0/0 Boot/Swap 500MB (Fat16)
1/0 Win2K 2.5 BG (NTFS)
0/1 Win98SE 2.5 GB (FAT32)
0/2 BeOS 1 GB (BFS)
1/1 Linux Mandrake 7.2 3.5GB (LFS)
0/3 Programs 10.3 GB (FAT32)
1/2 Gamez 9.5 GB (FAT32)
1/3 MP3'z 8.5 BG (FAT32)
0/4 Linux Swap 500MB (LSWF)

C:\ 1.7 Winblows
D:\ 1.31 Games
E:\ 6.48 All my crap, downloads, music, etc.
F:\ 5.6 Programs, and a couple of games.

For a Gaming/MP3 system with a dual boot OS (98SE/2K) and a 40/45 Gig HD I use this:

3.23G C: Win98SE
6.42G D: Win 2K Pro
8.42G E: Games/Misc. (I name this partition Storage)
20.1G F: MP3's

If 98SE (or ME) is your only OS and you run Office/Works (or any "Program FIles" based software) give it 5-6G and allocate the extra 3-4G elsewhere. Photoshop (or any digital image software) also requires more space for the OS.
