I keep a xanga because someday I'd like to write a book. So I use it as a place to practice. Making it public lets me get some feedback from people who stumble across it. I try to stay away from topics like what I did today, why I'm happy/sad today, ranting about my job, etc. Oftentimes I'll take an idea or event that occurred to me during the day, and develop it into a short story that's 90% fiction.
