Hi, I find it extremely annoying when I want to do something with my laptop and I have to find an outlet within an hour or less of starting. The wonder of the portable computer has been transformed into the power hungry notebook tethered by its power adapter. But perhaps most of my annoyance is caused by previously owning laptops capable of 5hour run times, which were as powerful as can be in their time. So here I ask my AnAndTech brethern, how long has your laptop's battery lasted, please try and remember every laptop you have owned and approx how long its battery lasted on average and the longest time it ever ran, without counting time in standby. Please also notw if these times were in Linux or some other circumstance like a BIG battery. When finished I will compile a table of all of these and hopefully find somewhere to publish them for the world to know. Please follow the format of my examples below.

THANKS
[manufacturer & model] [CPU model & clock] [CD/DVD] [avg. run time] [max run time] [1 Poor Laptop - 5 Great Laptop (for the purpose it served you & quality, do not factor battery time into this rating)]
  1. Austin unknown, Intel DX-2 100MHz, none, 1hr30min, 2hr, 4
  1. Panasonic CF-27, PII 300MHz, CD, 3hr, 5hr30min!(Linux), 3(5 if you don't count size and weight{9lbs})
  1. Micron GoBook2, PII 266MHz, CD, 2hr30min(bay battery), 10hr(big base battery), 2(unstable)
  1. HP n5000, PIII 650MHz, CD/DVD, 1hr, 1hr45min, 4
  1. Dell CPx H, PIII 500MHz, CD/DVD, 1hr30min, 2hr30min, 3

Lets make this list long. If your laptop is already posted by me or anyone else, post your review and I will average things, or something fair.

My IBM Thinkpad T23, which is 1.13Ghz with 512MB of RAM runs around 2 - 2.5+ hours on the main battery and about 1.5 - 2 additional hours on the UltraBay Port battery.

Where's your poll form? Anyway, the battery rundown time on my Gateway Solo 9300 cx (15.6-in LCD) is 2 hrs, 55 minutes currently. It started out alomost 18 mos. ago at 3 hrs, 5 minutes. As the battery ages, it gradually diminishes - that is normal.

My Compaq Armada 7750MT can go for about 2 hours 30 minutes when in use, and about 7 hours when turned off. Sometime, I really need a new battery. :)

I haven't timed it exactly, it's still new, but my 800mhz combo drive iBook gets about 4 hours right now. OSX 10.2.2.
Of course, this depends on what I'm doing with it, I might be able to go longer if I were really frugal with the tasks, or if I was only reading pdf's or something.

Thing is, this thing is just over a week old and I don't turn it off at all .. my uptime is getting, was getting up there but i had to reboot today because I installed itunes 3 (don't ask why, I apparently deleted my original one) and had to reboot. Love having *nix league uptimes on a laptop. I just plug it in whenever it gets to about a quarter or so, so I don't really pay attention.

Compaq Presario 1247, AMD K6-2 400MHz, CD, 2hr30min, 6hr00min, 3

If I hookup my CRT monitor to my laptop and use it. I can get near 6hr battery run time.

Of course! The display eats up most of one's battery capacity. And, if you hook up to a CRT, you can hook up your brick, run on A/C power and forget about the battery :)

My PowerBook 1 GHz doesn't last quite as long - cut about a half hour off of that I think.

Apple iBooks and TiBook certainly do well in the power utilization dept.

Oh yeah! :)

Luv my compact lappy. Does EVERYTHING I need to for work. Games suck on it though, but that wasn't my main reason to get this perfect piece of computer equipment. Runs MAME just fine though. :)

Hmmm... with (very) light usage my PowerBook has just hit about the 4 hour mark in OS X, and the battery says it has 15% left. I guess I underestimated this sucker. Very nice. :)

When my Inspiron 4100 (PIII 866-M/ATI Mobility Radeon/14.1" TFT) was brand new, my battery would last just under 3 hours playing a DVD.

After a year of abuse (leaving the battery in while it was on AC) it would play that same DVD for just over 2 hours. (My other 1/2-capacity "spare" battery lost 80% of it's charge time over that same year as it ALWAYS stayed in.)

If you want your battery to last, REMOVE it when you are on AC

Now that Dell sent me 2 brand new replacement batteries under warranty (they actually LOST my main battery while it was in for repair), they will only be charged and in the notebook when it is used away frrom AC (the "junk" battery remains in as a UPS since it is wrecked anyway but allows a 10 minute shutdown if the power fails)

Inspiron 8200, 1.6 ghz P4, DVD drive, Geforce 4 Go w/ 15" UXGA screen, 5

Averages 2:10 I'd say, but mostly it's been tethered to my outlet in my room or plugged into my car's outlet w/ a car/place adapter. Very rarely does it ever actually get taken anyplace and used on straight battery power.
