Software developer/a happy amount/not particularly hard, but I got lucky. And I'm a nice guy, which helps :) Plus i'm good at pretending to pay attention with somebody (maintain good eye contact while dreaming instead about a movie, for instance).

Ain't nobody going to post their income.

Post yours :)

I'm not going to post my income and it's not because of either of those two reasons. If somebody asks me straight out I'll answer on a personal basis (except if you PM me right now I won't because then somebody may just drop it in the thread!). I won't post it here because people have a bad tendency of judging a person based on their income. I'll say that right now mine is pretty good (I think), and one wouldn't have thought I'd be making it considering that 3 years ago I was making $25k CAN (again - don't judge based on income!).

Yea, that's tips. I usually make about 200 dollars a week, which is for 35 hours. I do usually work near 40 hours, though. I only make $5.75 an hour, but usually between 200-250 a week in tips.

Also, I don't claim tips. I am, however a full time college student, so I guess you could say I work 80 hours a week :p

Wireless Retail Kiosk Manager, 20k, just show up to work and like enjoy coming to work. I also used to come into work earlier than scheduled, bought my own items for a store that I did not run (laser printer, intellimouse), and just liking my job. I don't like it anymore but I did.

Also before August I was making 30k. The managers of this company had to take a huge pay cut in order to stay afloat.

Director of four departments / really good / worked harder than everyone else did

Looking back, had everyone else worked to the best of their abilities I would never have made it so far. But many of my co-workers worked as little as they could get away with, and would congratulate each other on their new and creative ways to avoid working. It was the way they got respect from their peers. Working hard wasn't cool, but finding ways to work only one hour out of an 8-hour shift was cool.

One of them told me years ago that if they are only going to pay him $X, he's only going to work $X worth. He couldn't understand that in order to move up you have to show that you can do the job. As far as the managers feel, he's only worth $X because that's all he's ever shown he can do.

Now I see that some of them regret what they did. Some of them have 20 years service and some people with just 5 years have passed them by because those 20-year people have a reputation of doing as little as possible. They have changed, but their reputation still clings to them.

On the flipside of that you have those who go way beyond what's expected and see absolutely no return.

Of course that includes tips! The job is all about tips and tips alone. If he worked 80 hours per week, he'd be pulling at least $1,000 per week. But most drivers would get burned out quickly working that many hours. I'm guessing he works 3-4 days/nights per week.

I also deliver pizzas. I worked about 31 hours last week. With my wage ($5.15/h + $.25/h bonus for having a cell phone), tips, and delivery commission (a small fixed amount paid by the store to the driver for each delivery), I made right around $580 before taxes and expenses. It varies from week to week, but thats pretty typical for the place I work now. I could pull in $50,000 per year doing 50-55 hours per week, but I'm going to school, so those kind of work hours wouldn't work out. (I plan to do better for myself.)

Subtract the car expenses, and it's not that impressive. Remember that the 100% residential type of driving we do is extra rough on cars. Even the best economy cars (like the Civic I used to have) don't break 26 MPG. My current car, a Mazda Protege, gets about 21 MPG. My old Saturn got about 19 MPG. Given an 8-10 hour driving shift, figure your first 30-60 minutes of work only fills the gas tank for the night. Then figure your next hour's work pays for car insurance (full coverage is a good idea). Then figure another hour's work for brake pads, tires, oil changes, and other car M&R (maintenance and repair). Don't forget the purchase price of the car itself!

I know that happens, but in my personal experience the people who felt that way were mis-applying their efforts. I once had a boss that told me that the way to succeed was as simple as: (1) Find out what your boss wants; (2) Do it. Some people work very hard on the things they like working on, but those aren't always the things that should be worked on.

There was a time when I worked in a utter hellhole. The owner was insane, and all the managers were complete suckups and yes-men because doing otherwise meant sure termination. There were a few hardworking employees but the majority of people were just trying not to go postal and keep a paycheck. In a place like that, there's no future. The only thing you could aspire to was to become one of the toadying managers someday. I could have stayed there but it was clear they had no future as a company, so I left. As proof of their insanity, when I gave notice they offered me a huge raise to get me to stay, but told me I would have to keep it quiet because I would be making more than my boss! I assumed that meant the boss didn't know what the people working for him were making.

They are out of business now, and I feel bad for the people who stayed around until the end. It should have been obvious that no company that was run so poorly had any future. I took less money to go somewhere else, but it truly paid off in the long run.

At my store, they just deduct the delivery commission from what I owe the store, so I get to take that money home each night. I wish that I could make a little more money in tips (well, at least how much you make) - but our store has a HUGE delivery area, so that really cuts down on how many deliveries I can take in a night. But, I am up for a $.25 raise next month, so I'll be making 6 bucks a hour......

Yeah, that's what they do at my store too. I've never heard of it being done another way. I just put out the info about the delivery commission to clarify the three ways I get paid on the job.

I can also make money in one more way: If I felt like it, and I get back to the store soon enough AFTER CLOSING TIME, before the other drivers take them all, I'm allowed to "buy" any left-over slice pies for $5 each and go out to the strip clubs and other such places that are open after the bars close and sell them for $10. ($10 is the absolute rule, the code of honor among drivers, because we don't under-cut one another).

We close at 3:30 AM though, and at that point, I just want to cash-out, do my clean-up duties, grab my free "shift beer" (or two ;) ), and go home.

I must admit, the place I work at is really laid back, and those free "shift beers" are a true benefit, because I haven't bought any beer to bring home for over a month and a half, when I started working there. That saves me a lot of money!

BTW, if you want to make more in tips, you've got to go work for an independent place with a lot of business (and a good reputation)that doesn't run crazappy "specials" on TV that appeal to the cheap-asses. I think I'd be hard-pressed to find a better place for a driver to work than the place I work now though. I've actually wanted in where I work now for the last year and a half, but they only recently hired me, after I already had almost 3 years delivery experience in another restaurant.
