Post Your HL2: Lost Coast Performance

I'm curious how performance plays out for everyone so let's start some benching. If someone can host a couple demo files for me than we can all use the same ones to eliminate variability. Someone else can make some custom demos too if they'd like.

Maybe we should have some standard resolutions and graphic settings too. I'm open to suggestions but maybe we could try the following:

1024x768
1280x1024
1600x1200 (1680x1050 can also be used as it is within 1-2fps of 1600x1200 from my testing)

4AA/8AF, all details on high, reflect all, either full hdr or no hdr

Choose from the settings above and post your scores. I'm looking forward to the SLI guys making me drool.

If you're not sure how to run a timedemo, just open up your console by hitting the "~" key (after going to options, keyboard tab, advanced, and enabling console) then typing in timedemo and the name of the demo than just hit enter and it will run through it for you and post an average fps at the end.

Someone please pm me if you can host these demo files I have. They're only about 2MB combined.

Just for the hell of it, I tried playing at 12x10 2x/8x all settings maxed out, and it ran about 40fps average. But it does look better than any other game I've seen yet.

Anyways, someone make a demo so we can all do an accurate benchmark.

It looks like I can e-mail the demos to people but it doesn't look like that site will host the files.

to those downloading... copy/paste link location as I think it's sensitive to how many direct links are received.

Church demo:

1680x1050 4xSSAA/16xAF - 48.85 fps (settings I play)
1680x1050 4xSSAA/8xAF - 50.31 fps
1680x1050 4xAA/8xAF - 52.79 fps (settings you asked for)
1680x1050 4xAA/8xAF - 56.69 fps (NV AF optimizations enabled)

1280x1024 4xSSAA/16xAF - 64.65 fps

1024x768 4xSSAA/16xAF - 70.76 fps

rig in sig.

...it works, btw 🙂

...and where are your numbers?

its very "motivating" when the poster before you has a X2 4200, 2GB and a SLI 7800GTX setup..... 😉

Anyway i did timedemo church at 1280x1024, everything at max, hdr full, refl all etc. 4xAA and 8xAF, on a X850XT@549/580. Latest Cats.

28,4FPS

whew..thats very close to what i consider "playable"....but it still looked smooth.

edit: type 'timedemo demo_church\demo_church' if you have problems starting the timedemo

I also disable all the AF opimizations that I can via the driver. I just ran it with the opts on... I didn't notice any visual difference (but it's a short demo), and I hit 56.69.

I'm curious as to what the settings were that these guys used.

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2005/09/21/lost_coast_benchmark/2.html

They stomp my dual GTXs with a single @ 1024x768 with only a minor reduction in AA.

What do you get with your Athlon64 X2 4400+ at 2.72Ghz?

With my own timedemo going from start to the gate w/ the fisherman back out to the sea area looking across the water at the boat I get 34fps at 1680x1050/ HQ in control panel TSAA/GC AA and all settigns as high as possible in Lost Coast 4aa/16af

(thats 1 GTX, I only have 1)

Hey, do you have any idea how to allow 8xs AA in LC or any other game w/o crashing?

Thanks

wheeeeehaw!

I love watching other people's demos. "Why can't he change weapons?" "Wonder if that headcrab ever got him?"

I normally run games at 2xAA/4xAF so I thought this would be fun...specs in sig.

At OP's settings, demo_church:
1024*768 - 27.81 FPS / 3.181 val
1280*1024 - 12.57 FPS / .814 val

BLAZIN!

Decided to run it at 1280*1024 2xAA/4xAF directly after the 1280 demo, no big deal...errors up the wazoo. Took a screenshot but my machine's unstable now, can't even open MS Paint.

methinks my machine got tired

4AA/8AF, all details on high, reflect all, either full hdr or no hdr

1600x1024 (16:10 aspect),This is the res I used when first playing through lost cost:
BEACH: 46.32 fps , No HDR 66.7 fps
CHURCH: 39.38 fps , No HDR 51.81 fps

1024x768:
BEACH 78.76 fps , No HDR 101.26 fps
CHURCH 76.28 fps, No HDR 88.29 fps

For kicks I ran it at the maximum selectable 16:10 resolution of 2048x1280
BEACH 27.27 fps / No HDR 46.74 fps
CHURCH 23.64 fps / No HDR 32.69 fps

Not exactly smooth w/ HDR @ 2048x1280 but it was playable and sure looks nice, I wonder how much SLI will help at that res? Currently running a single Evga 7800GTX KO , Detailed specs in sig.

Few shots I took @ 2048x1280 (For some reason the AI was disabled when loading my autosaves)

Yes, V-sync off. Sorry I didn't specify that.

All right. Here are a few initial numbers for you with everything @stock

1600x1200
Beach 39.9fps
Church 31.59fps

Just for fun

1920x1200
Beach 31.04fps
Church 24.99fps

I'll oc the card and cpu and see what happens.

UPDATE-

Here are the results with 7800GTX@520/1350 and 3700+@2.85GHz:

4AA/8AF Full HDR, Max Detail, Reflect All

1024x768
Beach - 82.72
Church - 82.71

1280x1024
Beach - 56.98
Church - 51.63

1600x1200
Beach - 42.49
Church - 34.20

1920x1200
Beach - 33.80
Church - 26.80

I only gain ~.2fps from ocing the cpu.

Ok here goes - cats 5.7, optimizations disabled, all settings maxed out, 1280x1024 res:

CHURCH DEMO -
4xAA/8xAF/Full HDR = 30.33 fps
same with no HDR = 38.47

2xAA/8xAF/HDR = 36.35
same without HDR = 47.11
no HDR, Optimizations on = 54

0xAA/0xAF/HDR = 56.06
same without HDR = 86.01

Edit: BEACH DEMO -

4xAA/8xAF/HDR = 29.7 fps
no HDR = 49.4

2xAA/8xAF/HDR = 34.4
no HDR = 50.6

Er... HDR + AA works fine on 7800. You can tell its enabled in the screenshots I posted in previous post.

They cant when using the EXR HDR method, using the FP buffer. They can when HDR is done using shaders, and so can all the other DX9 cards.

whats really interesting, to see how totally gpu dependent this is.
Eg. my A64 runs at 2607 and i get 28,4FPS....and i clock down my CPU so it runs only at 948MHZ (4x237) and i get 27,6FPS...shows you how the X850XT limits the whole thing and how useless a fast CPU is

doing one test at 6xAA/16xAF now since this is my standard HL2 resolution. Funny thing is in normal HL2/HL2DM with those settinngs i scream, 70, 80, 100+ish FPS.....shows you that LC is a class of its own....interesting to see what the diff 4xAA/8xAF -> 6AA/16AF is

Edit: 12x10/6xAA/16xAF, all max: 21.5 FPS.....blah 🙁
