Ok. i think my results are better now! Much better

I updated bios and highpoint bios. made harddrive master, and put it on my highpoint controller.

Ibm 75gxp 15GB (not using raid and win2k)

maximum= 37912kps
minimum= 16580kps
average=28857.kps
Random access time: 12.4ms
Read burst speed: 63.7mbps
cpu utilization= 12.7%

Looks like everything is fine except for the cpu utilization. What is the deal with that?

I can't believe I just found this.
Dusted off an old 95' Maxtor, 3000 RPM series and 128 Kb cache that produced:

Maximum - 2269.0kps
Minimum - 1838.0kbps
Average - 2052.6kbps
Read burst speed - 2.2mbps
Random acces time - 29.9ms
Cpu utilization - 0.4%

Think I'll stick with the Maxtor Plus 40 :)
By the way the boot time was a full minute with the old Maxtor and twenty seconds with the new Maxtor.
Same specs for the setup that were posted earlier.

I upped a pic of both Maxtors for comparison
Try and beat this with my 466 Celeron

What programs do you have running in the background. Check to see if any software starts up with your pc, I bet thats the cause.

Nope. when i test i do a frest boot and have no startup programs or anything. task manager shows nothing loaded and 0% cpu usage upon startup of win2k

i dunno if these scores are accurate, because winbench reports that my hard disks get around 8-9 ms access times, but here they are.

ibm ultrastar 9ES on ultra wide 2 scsi
12.5 ms
40.6 mbps read burst speed
cpu util-1.1%
read max-13558.0kps
read min-5043.0kps
average- 10815 kps

quantum atlas III 18 gig on ultra wide 2 scsi
12.4 ms
50.7 mbps read burst speed
read max-12368 kps
read min-5570 kps
average-10068 kps
cpu util-1.1%

with or without advanced size check doesn't make a big difference in the scores, here they're disabled. run under winNT 4.0 server sp5.

"hdtach gives low scores under win2k and nt"

could that be why my scores blow? i know these drives are faster than this, i've done 320x240 uncompressed vid capture on these drives with no frames dropped at 30 fps. my friend's 45 gig maxtor drive gets higher scores than i do, and he drops frames like mad. does anyone know a fix for this? or do my drives really blow?

A single Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45
(running ata/66)

edit: how about I just let a screenshot do the talking :D

my mobo is an Asus P3V4X.
and did i mention how much I love this HD?? :D it's whompin some SCSI ass it looks like.

btw, if I turn on the quiet mode (HD makes no noise whatsoever...at least none that I can hear) the scores are pretty much the same but access time jumps to 17ms. Screw that! it barely makes noise anyway.

How about these scores:

Disk 1 Primary Master:
IBM 13?GXP 10GB.

Maximum - 13222.0kps
Minimum - 8646.0kbps
Average - 11385.6kbps
Read burst speed - 30,3mbps
Random acces time - 12,7ms
Cpu utilization - 2,9%

Disk 2 Primary slave:
Quantum Fireball 5,6GB.

Maximum - 11690.0kps
Minimum - 6733.0kbps
Average - 9896.3kbps
Read burst speed - 30.3mbps
Random acces time - 15.6ms
Cpu utilization - 2.2%

These disks are both my primary disks, in my primary computer

Looking at the scores in this thread, I have to say its time for me to upgrade.

PC specs.

AMD Athlon 500@780
ASUS K7M (ATA66)

OS: Win98FE

haha. ok. i just opened an image in photoshop. 50 megs. resized it and saved it. did same on my friend's system which has a diamondmax eide. we timed the reading and saving parts of the operation. we have both 256 megs of ram. now...this is interesting, i finished 35% (approximately) faster in saving and opening processes. but according to hd tach, he gets around 11.3 ms access time and 27-30 megs/sec average transfer rate and i get around 1/3 of that. has anyone experienced any weird benches running under NT? or am i alone here? weird. maybe some voodoo mojo is happening to my system. hmmm....and some of the 0% cpu utilization scores are somewhat suspicious. maybe it's just that time of month for my computer.
