and to bring attention to this ORIGINAL post 😉

haha, i figured everyone would be takin' pics!

Took lots of pics of the DC fireworks, but left my camera at home....so going to have to wait...

Ok, I was trying to figure out how to do this the other night. I got some, but they were all blurry. What is the best way to shoot fireworks? And just for curiosity, what kind of camera did you use? I was using my Rebel XT.

Nate, I shot with my DRebel and 17-40L @ 40mm. I think my settings were ISO 100, F4.0, 1/15 sec shutter speed (if i recall correctly)

and a tripod, I assume. I still need to get one.

heh, you assume correctly

I shot with my Rebel and a Tokina 24-200

My settings varied from f/8 - f/16 at ISO 100.

I set camera to BULB setting and used a remote camera release i made out of radio shack parts (i also used an IR remote release)

Setup on sturdy tripod and had exposures ranging from 3-10 seconds.

using the remote release, i tended to start the shot as fireworks were headed up in the air and end it when there was a break in the explosions.

So i didn't use any specific time values, i just sorta did it w/out counting.

remote release is key to avoid blur

a tripod is a must. you can see the exif information on my page. i used a shutter speed of 2sec for the exposure you see there -- but it varied throughout.

your pics are awesome, by the way.

how did you achieve the look in this image to make the people blackened but the memorial/washington monument yellowed?

and what shutter speed was that pic taken on?

judging by the blur of the people in the boat, it's probably around a 5 second exposure and the monument/memorial are the only parts of the image with any type of light on them (why they yellowed)

thanks. yeah, it was about 4 second exposure. i forced the camera in AV mode to f/8 which gave that "star" effect to the lights on the bridge in the right of the picture. at iso 100 the camera figured it needed about 4 seconds to get correct exposure. it's not blurred because tripod was there and it wasn't very windy.

i kinda liked the blur in the people in the canoe...the lighting on the monuments was the only lighting there. I shot in RAW so by adjusting the white balance after the fact i was able to slightly tweak the colors of the monuments.

me?

i did a few things...depending on the pictures

1) for most i imported the RAW file into photoshop and slightly boosted the saturation and edited the white balance to achieve the most natural colors.

then i simply ran an unsharp mask on the resulting jpg.

2) for a few that were "noiser" (digital noise from the darkness) i ran them through a program called "noiseware" that helps "smooth out" some of the digital artifacts.

I am going to try in the future to user some layers and what not to help deepen the black. i think you take a picture with the lenscap on , and then you can layer the actual pic and the completely black pic and it's supposed to help reduce noise and stuff (kinda like noiseware does).

My fireworks pictures from last year are HORRIBLE....so i appreciate the comments. i really think it came down to having a tripod and remote release and some luck!

i definitely agree. remote release is awesome. tripod is also a definite need.

i'll have to look into this noiseware program. sounds sweet!

i need to learn how to edit my pictures in photoshop and how to get the white balance/hue/saturation stuff to make my picture look real. i'm not so good at figuring that out. i need a tutorial 😱

your pics really are stunning. i need to stop looking at them so i can get some work done here though 🙂
