I picked up my first cold of the season last night. It started with that 'coated throat' feeling. Today it's that plus congestion, sneezing, and a woozy head.

My boss recommended Zicam nasal gel. This is the first nasal spray/gel/anything I've ever tried. Seems to loosen things up briefly. I've been also sucking (and eventually chewing) on Robitussin cough drops, I also have some Halls with Vitamin C at home.

I've been sipping on ginger ale since last night, the fizziness soothes the throat irritation. I found that gargling with ginger ale gives me a longer blast of relief. This is based on my mother's suggestion of gargling with salt water, but I can't get past the taste.

Feed a cold, starve a fever right? I was eating some leftover pizza slices and my boss's wife said I should avoid foods that produce phlegm (i.e. cheese/dairy). I did have two bowls of chicken noodle soup over lunch, any other ideas?

In Soviet Russia we have similar saying, "starve a cold, starve a fever."

I try to dilute the germs by spreading them around as widely as possible.

nothing I can think of that you haven't mentioned.
gargling warm salt water helps my throat when its sore. the taste never bothered me.

i usually take 1 1000mg vit. c pill after breakfast and 1 after dinner.
when I get sick i'll probably try and 1 - 2 more through the day.

Considering it's Soviet Russia, wouldn't that be more along the lines of "Starve in the cold, with a fever"?

Emergen-C seems to work for me, although I guess vitamin C pills do the same thing. Otherwise, avoid dairy products, drink lots of hot and cold water, keep yourself clean (shower) and get lots of sleep.

Pity is very underrated. I like it. It's good.

I go crazy if I can't breathe out of my nose at night. When I recently got a cold w/ insane congestion I took dayquil/nyquil, used Afrin to initially clear my nose, and then used Flonase for long term decongestion. Be careful with Afrin, though, because it can only be used for three days. Coughing was the only symptom I really had to deal with.

edit: oh yeah. sleep sleep sleep. and feel better!

I had a bad winter last year, caught 3 colds in a month and a half time, took zicam, works every time. My colds were stressed related. Trick with zicam, take it immediately with the onset of a cold, and keep taking it. For me, by the 3rd day, the cold was clearing up, and felt MUCH better. Try it, it does work!

Zicam, Vitamin C, Echinacea tea and chicken soup or chicken broth, but as the old saying goes: "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"....once your over the cold keep up with the vitamin C and zinc supplement to keep the immune system up.

Plenty of water is also recommended to help with congestion...it helps to thin out the mucus.
