i guess the internet providers are your daddy look at that upload speed! ouch!

Yup... It's called zero competition. I cry everytime I see a Verizon commercial selling DSL for $15.

I have a 1Mb cable modem and they restrict the upload speeds. And for that crap I pay $49.95 a month. 😕 And that's a bundled price. If I didn't have my long distance with the company I'd pay out an extra $10 a month.

DSL is the same price but at least you get 1Mb up and down for that.

😕

i'll never go back to living in an area that only offers satellite internet. only if i can afford to lay out my own t1 connection to the middle of nowhere would i move to such an area 😀

SBC DSL, which is jumping to $39.00/mth. in July. Maybe it's time to switch to cable. It wasn't available when I started broadband, but is now at about the same price. I hate to lose my years old, primary email address though.

Here on my work PC (uses Cox Cable) I get:

Download Speed: 7335 kbps (916.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1022 kbps (127.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

I'll edit in my home PC stuff when I get there.

Edit: Home (Same Cox Cable)

thats insane....

we must be like the last country (bar 3rd world) that gets HDTV and fast internet

the fastest you can get here, is 8meg ADSL and thats only if you live pretty damn close to the telephone exchange. fastest cable is supposed to be NTL (formerly comcast) 10meg cable service (much better than ADSL since they use optical networks) but they impose a 75GB month download limit.

hopefully at the end of this month, my NTL 2mb cable back home will get the free speed bump to 4mb down 400k up

HDTV is just kicking off here, literally, sky and telewest are providing the world cup in HD, and digital terrestrial TV is set to go from SD to HD soon too, with analogue TV being switched off permanently in 2012

Okinawa Cable Network
Advertises 30 MBps for 4,200 yen (about $38) per month.

I used each server three times and posted the best speed.
Average was about 300k up and 800k down.

Seattle 595 dn 2072 up
San Fran 326 dn 1404 up
Los Angeles 649 dn 2180 up
Dallas 325 dn 645 up
Chicago 445 dn 786 up
Atlanta 495 dn 1470 up
New York 563 dn 954 up
Washington DC 388 dn 889 up

I'm pretty dissapponted. I realize that it has to go over the Pacific Ocean and all to get to these servers, but even Japanese sites (some of them on this island!) only show about 6-10 MBps down on average.
