Get a Retail 1.6A. The HSF that comes with it is great for ocing. For the mobo, I'd go with Asus P4T-E with ICS Clock Generators, and get Samsung PC800. You should be able to easily with that setup hit 533fsb+PC1066 SPeeds which will out perform any oced P4 DDR setup out there. Good luck!!!!
 
Newegg has the asus p4s333 (refurbished with 30 day warranty) for only $75 shipped. It's an sis 645 board.
 
After doing some research, I just ordered my setup. Epox 4BDA2+, 1.6A, 512 meg Samsung PC2700. I'll have it next week. This sould be a great combo. I'll be using the stock HS/Fan and going for ~2.2 GHz or so.

Unlike your Athlon XP setup, on Northwood you can use the stock HSF for OC, and it's still on
decent temp, my 1.8@2.5[fsb 138] still under 40C idle ad goes as high as 46C loaded, and it's quiet too.

The retail heatsink is pretty close to as good as you're going to get.
It's more than adequate for at least 2.6 GHz or so, and even then you'll rarely break 45-47C... These aren't Athlons 😉

Just toss some silver grease on the retail heatsink instead of the heat spreader -- you'll be fine. My max temp at 2.56GHz with one case fan is 46C.

The alpha will most likely gain you little to no extra speed. Perhaps once we start reaching 3GHz or so, we'll need it. But not yet.

 
i'm very happy with the asus p4s333. i'm not pushing it but i'm at 2.2 with the stock hsf and default voltages on that board. it's been great so far.

Still don't get it
The Alpha or other kill me dead HS means nothing on the P4. The retail HS will do as good as the next HS on the block. The P4 can only go so far and after that no amount of cooling is going to take it further.
 
At 1.6GHz, my P4 peaks at 34C. At 2.56GHz, it peaks at 45C or so. This is with the retail heatsink.


YOU WILL BE WASTING YOUR MONEY BUYING AN AFTERMARKET HEATSINK!
They will offer you NO higher speeds, and LITTLE, IF ANY decrease.
The retail heatsink is quiet, big, and works as good as ANYTHING else out there.

Northwoods do NOT benefit off of a better heatsink. At least not noticeably. Things are different on the dark side. Buying an alpha is just like dumping a fifty dollar bill out your window. Pointless. Plus, the retail heatsink is SO much easier to install. Installing the alpha is almost like installing an AMD heatsink 😉

lol, you still dont get it. Look, what AMD chips have done to you. You have become addicted to good heatsinks/fans.

Intel P4 also has a feature that if your processor goes to a certain temperature, it will slow down, it wont burn unlike the AMDs. Moreever, Intel processors are more efficient and dont realease that much heat.

I wouldnt waste $50 for another heatsink for an Intel Processor. I am also trying to build the same system and i will go with the Retail Heatsink/fan that it comes with.

Hope this will save you $50. If you still have the extra $50 and want to spend it, send it to me, LOL. I would rather spend the extra money on more/better ram or better video card. there is no reason to spend more money for a heatsink for an Intel processor.
 
I bought an AVC Sunflower and it wasn't any better than my retail HSF that came with my 1.6a ( I actually bought it for a 1.6 Willie that I ended up selling) Now I haven't tried the Alpha so I can't say whether it would help or not. Maybe someone who has can comment.
 
not bitter at all, simply sick of the amd bashing, actually. no matter.... i'm a die-hard amd fan, and i'm willing to try a p4, i wish some of the pentium people would try the "dark" side... they do a damn good job.

I had a P3 and just wanted to see what AMD had to offer.
I'm happy with it.
 
I thought Intel was the dark side 😉

I've had an AMD for quite a while, and I still do. I have a P4 as well, and I was just pointing out that things are much different on the intel side. I wasn't AMD bashing in the slightest degree.
