Probably the saddest song I know is the final aria in the Saint Matthew Passion ("Mache dich, mein Herze rein..."). Of course, you've gotta listen to the whole passion and know what they're saying. Chopin is quite the master of sad music and melancholy, but there's also Schubert and Tchaikovsky. Rock/Rap/Modern music always seems so tacky and contrived to me when it comes to sorrow.

It's not so much that they're tacky and contrived, it's just that you can't convey sorrow efficiently with guitars and drums. Throw in an orchestra with them and it works SO much better it isn't funny. Hell, or even just add a piano and it works wonders.

There is plenty of good instrumental rock that conveys sadness and sorrow effectively. Like I said above: Mogwai. All instrumental rock. Hell anything under the post rock genre would be sad rock instrumentals, and not the crappy metal or anything, just good melodies.
