Post Office: OK to hand letters to the counter ladies?

Today I went to the post office to send a package to someone and also had a stamped envelope I wanted to send. I handed the stamped envelope to the postal service worker, and the person who was with me yelled at me and said that it was rude for me to do that, and that I should put it in the outgoing mail box by the entrance to the post office.

My attitude is that the people are being paid to take mail, including stamped letters, and that even if I went out of my way to put the letter in the outgoing mailbox by the door, they have to go get it. Plus, it was after 5, so I wanted to make sure it went out today.

So, is it rude to hand them a stamped letter instead of putting it in the mailbox, or is it ok?

It's fine, I did it this morning. In fact, most of the time they offer to take it from me and mail it.

That person that yelled at you is an idiot.

KT

If you went to the counter just to hand them a stamped envelope, that would be pretty dumb, but still not rude.

I fail to see any issue since you were already mailing a package.

This.

OMG, you handed a letter to a postal worker! LOL.

They get paid for it. Unless they're job duties specifically says "do not accept envelopes at the counter", she needs to shut up.

Yeah. Foolish interpretation. Everyone knows that postal workers wouldn't yell in this situation - they'd lob a grenade over the counter and then head to their stash of AK-47s they illegally obtained by opening the boxes containing various internet orders.

u don't hand random workers mail.
inside most post offices theres a post slot or two as well, making such a gesture rather douchy since you should just walk the few steps and drop it in yourself. they do take it at the counter if you wait in line, but thats a different matter.

It's up there as plain as day.

I don't understand?

I give this post my stamp of approval. This certainly is a red letter day! Good thing the OP's friend didn't go postal.

Handing a letter to the worker is only an inconvenience to you - you have to wait in line, rather than just drop it in an envelope. But in this case, if you want it postmarked today, then there's nothing wrong with taking it to the counter. It should be a quick thing for them to take care of anyway.

"Hello, I just wanted to be sure that this got postmarked today, thank you."
Bam, done, and you're out.

A true failure at reading. It says "with me", not "helping me".
He's always foaming at the mouth to be outraged at something, ignore him.

...and I also just like to say it. Taking letters/packages (whether they stamped them or not) is the essence of a post office window attendants' job function.

Sorry, I did mess up. I fail at the reading comprehension.

I hope you're friend's hot, because either you misquoted her, or she's fuckin' retarded. Is it rude to deposit/withdraw money at a live teller instead of the ATM? Of course not, they're both matters of preference. Some people prefer a face to face live transaction rather than trusting some hunk of metal.
