Not many bad things to say about the Fit, so when someone has something bad to say, it's usually pretty weird.

Transmission won't shift into anything above third

That's because you're driving in "S" mode, which is intended to be used with the paddle shifters to drive it like a faux-manual. The S is for "Sequential Shift". If you don't use the paddles, it's analogous to being in D3 mode (which locks out 4th and 5th gears).

I will grant that it's not clearly described in the manual what happens if you use S mode without using the paddles, but it's well-documented online, and the manual does say to use S mode, shift to S AND click a paddle.

Everything in the car is plastic, it hydroplanes, and you can blow on the carpet and it shimmers.
Plastic? It's an economy car. Even so...you didn't notice the plastic interior when you test drove it? Not sure what he means by shimmering carpet...

Do not believe the hype. The engine is buzzy and the transmission hunts for the right gear. The ride is extremely bumpy, you feel everything. The seats are uncomfortable, and can't be height adjusted. You would never take this on a trip longer than 25 miles. It has beautiful styling, but that's all. A huge disappointment that I bought into because of all of the raves from the so-called car experts. I'm trading this in on a larger and more comfortable car.

If you read the reviews from the "so-called" car experts, they almost ALWAYS complain about engine noise and ride quality, especially in the sport trim which has alloy wheels and low-profile tires! If this was a shock, you did not read carefully enough.

.....

Actually most of the other reviews on Edmunds seem pretty pragmatic. People complain about rough ride, lack of power, etc. They are all "reasonable" complaints, although sort of ridiculous considering you bought an economy sub-compact with a 1.5L 117HP engine...what did you honestly expect?

Ehh I haven't seen anything amusing like that for the 2008 forester reviews ....

Seems like all the "cons" are pretty valid .... though some people are annoyed easier than others ....

Can you explain this a bit more? If I had a Fit in sequential mode, can I access all 5 gears with the paddles or not? With the guy complaining about it only going up to 3, it sounds like the first 3 gears are still automatic but the last gears need the paddles.

Lol wow at some of these(All of these are the exact same model as mine):

Review
I fell in love with this car as soon as it was released! It has such a sporty look! And the price was just right! And most importantly it's a Honda! I had just cooked my 1988 Accord after having driven it for 350,000 miles. The Civic has been wonderful! Just regular oil changes, tires and one new exhaust. Other than that ,nothing! I'm selling it now, only because we had a baby and the two door is no longer practical. I'm so sad to sell but bought a Honda Pilot to replace it. Gotta love Hondas! They go 4eva
Favorite Features
Sporty body! Sunroof/moonroof, spoiler. Very peppy little car at a great price! What isn't to love?
Suggested Improvements
I wish the newer Civics were more like the 2000 style! The new ones don't have that sporty look.

Review
I bought this car fresh off the lot with 17 miles on it. It now has 198,000 miles and still running great. No major mechanical issues and provides worry free driving with only regular scheduled maintenance. Even with the high mileage I still average between 31-35mpg on the highway!
Favorite Features
Great gas mileage, reliable, great looks, good interior
Suggested Improvements
Wished it had more cargo space, but that's the trade off for a economical car.

Review
I bought this used a few years ago with 80K miles. Had the timing belt/ acc. belts and water pump replaced at that time as per regular maint. Now have 115K of trouble free driving. This car should go 200K plus with regular service. This is a real solid, dependable little car. Keeps on going and going every day trouble free. Can't go wrong with a Honda.
Favorite Features
Easy control access and well designed displays.
Suggested Improvements
Little more HP for power.

This one must be a ricer...

Review
This car has always been there for me when I needed it the most. It was always running never broke down, very very few problems and I loved hearing that v-tec scream!
Favorite Features
V-TEC, sunroof, and the dash setup.
Suggested Improvements
Just a little lower and a spoiler on all models would be nice.

Alright, for one... The engine in the 2000 Honda Civic EX Coupes is a D16Y8. It has VTEC, but it's very hard to distinguish from the engine just reaching higher revs. It's not very noisy at all. :hmm:

Review
I bought my Honda about 4 months ago and have already put 7,000 miles on it. So far the only thing that has gone wrong is a heat shield fell off but thats a simple issue and is apparantly quite common with these cars. Other than that: Pros: Great driving feel, interior is well laid out, exterior design is simple but refined, has a good balance for city driving and highway driving. Cons: Long throws for the shifter, could use a 6th gear, exterior dents easly. Overall: I love my car, its fun to drive and doesn't use much gas.
Favorite Features
Good driving feel, good gas milage. I would recommend this car.
Suggested Improvements
6th gear and exterior dents too easily.

Review
I purchased my Civic EX 2dr 5sp used at the end of April, 2002, after graduating from college and getting my first full-time job. I drive a lot (had 22,000 on it from original owner, I now have 144,000). I have not had a single problem with it. I change my own oil/filter/spark plugs/MT fluid, but other than that I only go by what the manual says for maintenance -- astounding reliability. The engine still does not burn oil (none that I can tell with regular checks). My fuel economy during the summer stays near 36 mpg with a mix of city/hwy driving. Since relocating to Bullhead City, AZ, I have noticed that at its age the extreme heat does decrease acceleration and the AC.
Favorite Features
Ultra reliable (can't say enough about this car's reliability). Original front rotors/brake pads lasted for over 100,000 (even while I lived in Milwaukee). Steering/suspension is great (stills feels like new). Still have the original shocks, battery and rear brakes. No repair issues.
Suggested Improvements
More torque, but that was fixed with the 2006 model, apparently along with AC performance. More sound insulation -- it is somewhat noisy on the highway.

Review
I chose the ex because it comes with a v-tech engine and just about power everything. This car drives great. The suspension is tight and gives you confidence around sharp corners because it keeps you firmly planted to the ground (yet it still has a smooth ride). The car's steering is tight and responsive. The engine could use a little more power although it has more than enough power for every-day driving. The v-tech engine is amazing when the v-tech kicks in at 4500 rpm until it redlines at 7000 rpm. This car also has excellent visibility. The air conditioning is ice-cold, and the controls are nicely placed. With a big trunk and fold-down back seats, this makes a great car for everybody.
Favorite Features
great suspension, V-tech engine, tight steering, sunroof, ice-cold air conditioning, good factory speakers, all the extra options that come standard with the EX (keyless entry, power everything except seats), leg room in the back seats, fold-down rear seats, fun to drive, great visibility, 30 mpg
Suggested Improvements
a little more powerful engine (although this engine has more than enough for daily driving, especially when the v-tech kicks in at 4500 rpm (7000 rpm redline), make ABS standard on all models and trims

VTEC kicks in at 5500RPM for D16Y8 engines. Fail. And you can't even fucking hear the damn thing happen on this engine. Failz!

Anyway, the suspension and steering are a joke. Seriously. It's not a sports car and it has NO power. 0-60 for the brand new was somewhere around 8.5seconds. I'm lucky if I can manage 0-60 in less than 10! There is no POWER...

I hope those guys talking about vtec don't put coffee can mufflers on their cars. 7000rpm + tin can = very annoying, and you hear it for a long time because the car isn't pulling away from you while it's doing this.

Oh, they do. They do...

It's really annoying. My car sounds like it has a modified muffler because for some reason my muffler has some faultiness to it. It's extraordinarily loud already. People usually hear the car from a mile away if I am trying to drive fast. :awe:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvX7rD2avr8#t=1m05s Watch until maybe the 2 minute mark. It's boring after and before that. Btw, I'm going uphill when I am hammering the throttle.

http://www.insideline.com/noble/m400/full-test-2007-noble-m400.html

With 425 horsepower motivating only 2,484 pounds and enough mechanical grip to embarrass most supercars, the 2007 Noble M400 has laid waste to the record books at Inside Line like the Terminator tearing through a cop-filled doughnut shop.

Our testing equipment has definitely had a hard lesson in Newtonian physics. The Noble hit 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds, then streaked through the quarter-mile in 11.4 seconds at almost 120 mph. This makes it the quickest car we've ever tested, leaving behind the Corvette Z06, Ford GT and Porsche 911 Turbo.

The M400 also slices through the slalom at 79.4 mph, nearly 4 mph faster than the previous record-holder, the poised Porsche 911 GT3. The Noble also rips up the skid pad at 1.05g, breaking another standard previously set by the 911 GT3.

A $100,000 Kit Car?
It's worth it. The Porsche 911 GT3 is the Noble M400's closest competition in terms of performance, and a stripped-down GT3 will cost you $106,795.

And unlike a Porsche 911 GT3, the Noble M400 is comfortable and easy to drive in ways that no hot-rod Porsche can match. There's lots of wheel travel with a taut yet resilient ride. In fact, the M400 makes a Lotus Elise or Exige S seem downright miserable by comparison. And the Noble handles better.

With plenty of suspension travel to absorb huge midcorner bumps with ease, the Noble is also able to flash its speed on rolling country roads as well as smooth tarmac, unlike almost any other supercar you can name.

The Noble M400 has a keen balance that's actually more impressive than its ridiculous acceleration and outstanding handling. It operates on a level that's refreshingly honest, even basic. There are no extra buttons to push, no stability control to disable — no electronic nonsense to intrude into the magical link between driver and car. It's as if Sir Isaac Newton himself had a seat on the engineering committee and then rides shotgun during every drive.

It's that good.

That 3.2 seconds (actual: 3.17) includes 1 shift. 🙂

Not too shabby for the stock spec.

I don't own one of these, but the Chevy Aveo sounds horrible.
http://www.edmunds.com/chevrolet/aveo/2004/consumerreview.html

This car was awful. I've owned it less than six months and I've had to put an average of $400 per month to keep it on the road. In the time that I have owned it, three of the four wheel bearings have gone bad, the tranny went, the engine is going.

This car is not built for our environment. Sure it's good on gas but it's not reliable. I bought my car new, and it's been in the shop 13 times in 2 1/2 years. They have gone into my engine twice to fixe problems, and had to rebuild it. I've had 4 different oil leaks my a/c has been fixed 3 times, my brakes were coming loose and the list goes on. So please if you are reading this do not buy this car! It's a cute car but it's not worth the trouble.

After 3 years and 30000, break lights do not work. All bulbs blew at once. It's an electrical problem. Dealership thought they fixed it. 1 week later same problem all bulbs blew. After 40,000 miles shocks are worn, car getting bouncy. The last straw, The car was hit and totaled. Thank goodness I was hit on passenger side, because if I had been on the passenger side I would be a goner. The window exploded, glass everywhere, I was cut. thank goodness for seatbelts. All cars should have side air bags standard.

Timing belt broke 45,000 took out all but one valve. Coil pack went out 55,000. Right rear wheel bearing went out 59,000. Catalytic converter went out 60,000. Alarm system goes off on its own 63,000. Right rear wheel bearing went out second time disintegrating locking up rear wheel, no warning. 110,000 windshield leak above steering wheel, only when setting. Hood release cable snapped 112,000. Rear hatch latch stopped working 113,000. Gas mileage never better then 32mpg

I guess that's what you get for not buying a North American car. The very popular Honda Accord is assembled in Marysville, Ohio while the Chevy Aveo is made in Bupyong, South Korea :awe:

(yes I know the S2000 is from Japan and it works fine)

So... do you own this car or what?

Yeah, but mine is nowhere near stock. Stock, it's rated at 425hp, which translates to about 330hp to the wheels (on a very conservative DynoDynamics dyno).

Mine's at about 515hp to the wheels. 🙂 I'm a bit chicken to go much above this. It can already spin the tires shifting into 5th gear, with DOT-R semi-slick tires.

There are folks driving around with another 200+hp above this.

Pics. Stat.

Can you explain this a bit more? If I had a Fit in sequential mode, can I access all 5 gears with the paddles or not? With the guy complaining about it only going up to 3, it sounds like the first 3 gears are still automatic but the last gears need the paddles.

You can access all 5 gears using the paddles. I have a real MT so I can only go by what I'm reading but it sounds like if you put it in "S" and never touch the paddles, it will upshift at redline. So perhaps it would shift to 4th if you wound 3rd out to redline but this would probably be high enough speed that most drivers would rarely get it to happen or would suspect something wrong first.

If you actually engage sequential mode by pulling a paddle, the car will not auto upshift at all.

Basically if you do not plan to manually shift, you have to use regular old "D". You can still use the paddles to change gears temporarily, but it will resume normal AT behavior after some set period of time has lapsed.
