POST code FF????

To begin, i was on my pc and it was working fine. Out of the blue, it locked up, having never done this b4 .

So, i go to reboot and it instantly goes to POST code FF, no beep, nothing. Monitor light flickers and displays the screen that it would when its not connected.

I then go through the basics.

Try a different monitor, no luck.

Try a different video card, no luck.

Remove 1 stick of ram, no luck.

Swap ram, no luck.

Try a brand new power supply, no luck.

Finally, i tore down the computer and ended up with just the mobo, stick of ram, video card, and heat sink on my desk, eliminating all possibilites........but no luck. So, i swap in a new chip, no luck. Having checked and swapping everything out except the mobo i feel that i have a bios issue so i buy a new mobo. Guess what, same thing!

The specs are, AMD 2700, EPOX 8RDA3, Radeon 9600XT, Antec 450w powersupply, 1gb of crucial ram (2 512mb sticks). The new mobo i bought is an ASUS A7N8X-E. The chip i swapped out with my 2700 is an amd 1800. Ive tried both chips in both mobos and both power supplies with both mobos, and have tried 2 different video cards.....even an old pci video card. The only thing that remains the same on my system is the heatsink(alpha). Could this be causing a short or something? I dont see how it could be, especially when this problem happened while running the computer, and with all the times ive taken it off and reinstalled it i cant see the possiblity of it happening everytime.

I did a search and there were some threads relating to this problem, but nothing specific and nothing with a specific answer.

Code ff on my mobo is all clear but it never goes straight to that it just goes through them all. I had a similar problem this summer and went through pretty much everything you mentioned. I finally assumed it was mobo, an epox 8k3a+, and bought a new one and the same problem was there. It ended up that my 1800 was dying/dead/just plain wrong, which was weird because even when I switched out my processor it still wasn?t working. I?m still not sure what was going on but I bought an xp2700 and everything worked fine.

Not that any of that will really help but it?s just something to think about.

Seems like we have similar problems with identical parts. I guess its a possibility that my 2700 chip died, then the 1800 chip my friend sent me was bad too.

Even if i try to boot the computer with no ram or vid card in it goes straight to FF.

FF is either bad cpu or bad bios/wrong bios.

I have the same board and receieved the same message when powering on. Try switching around or unplugging onboard usb.

On the ASUS, i take it? I didnt connect the onboard USB.

I know that FF is either bad cpu or bad bios, thats why i replaced the chip....but no luck, then i replaced the board, no luck.

Now im leaning towards the 1800 chip i got from my friend is bad as well as my 2700. Ive never heard of bios going bad when the computer has been running for months?

Nope, I have the EPOX 8RDA3. I was getting the same post untill I disconnected the onboard usb

My computer had been running flawlessly for months though till this occurred.

Oh well, i sent it off to my friend to fix.

Any reason why it would carry over to a asus mobo? Only thing i can think of is both chips were bad?

How often does a chip just die, instantly...not showing any problems prior...... only a couple months old?
