Even when you take a step away from your level 55 Black Ops 2 profile, you still like to stay in the game by using military time (24-hour) instead of normal-person time. Although, I've always wondered... how hard is it to play Blops with bifocals? I can't imagine any other reason why you would need the time in the middle of the screen when it's at the bottom. 😛

A few observations.

Way too many people have tons of icons on their desktop. Even documents. There is a my docs folder for a reason.

A lot of Windows 8 desktop which doesn't make sense since supposedly, everyone hates it. (I have been using Win 8 since it came out) But I will give them this, everyone has a start button replacement (myself included, Start 8).

This post correlates with my view that the search in windows 7 is fine. Also, there are plenty of places to stick frequently used shortcuts. I'll bet a lot of these desktop icons see very little activity. Might as well us some of that wasted aspect ratio on the quick launch bar too!

You're shallow, image-obsessed, looking to own the latest and greatest equipment. You have a hard on for performance. Though your life is mind-numbingly empty and tedium-filled to such an extent that you find escape by watching cars circle endlessly as a metal soundtrack blares in your head.

I have dual screens but there is nothing on the other monitor except the background. I don't find desktop icons useful, they are just a distraction. The stuff I use on a daily basis are all on the quick launch bar.

I don't have a start button replacement.

Frankly, it's not necessary imho. I've adapted just fine.

Same here, though currently my desktop is down until this weekend as I'm rebuilding it.

I've been using Windows 8 since developer preview, through consumer and release candidate, and purchased it a few months ago. Had a Surface RT for a few months before selling it, too. I have no problems switching between Metro/Modern and desktop. Some things like control panel split (which should be fixed by Blue/8.1 I think) aren't ideal, but it's been fine.

Metro is definitely a boon for tablets and touch enabled laptops, and desktop it's pretty much a non-issue - it doesn't really help a ton (unless you have ADHD, and like the full screen focus of metro apps), but you can effectively ignore it and live in the desktop. With explorer, run command, and shortcuts, I don't really need the classic start menu.

I'm not sure if I'll enable start button when 8.1 comes out. I'm flexible, it doesn't matter either way to me. I routinely use Ubuntu, XP, Windows Vista and 7, and Windows 8. The initial 2 weeks of Windows 8 was an adjustment, and rightly so considering how big a change it was versus older versions of Windows, but I think if you don't force yourself to adapt you will probably hate it. I remember hating the ribbon for Office when it came out, but now I appreciate how condensed it is versus having menus branching out all over the place.

i don't have a start button replacement... never felt the need for one; the windows key on my keyboard works fine.

Nerdy white guy, hates apple. "Power user", but couldn't find your his way around a unix box if his life dependent on it.

^ Applies to pretty much everyone that will post some "modded"/themed bs minimalist windows desktop.

This made me lol.... I went through that stage years ago. You should have posted up yours though. I bet your FreeBSD distro hasnt properly detected your keyboard so the print screen button doesn't work.
