My desktop is completely bare except for three disk icons on the far left corner of my left LCD.
 
Could someone please explain to me wtf the whole cube thing is about? That seems like a waste of resources and doesn't seem very functional.

Its like having multiple monitors. Its actually quite convenient.

You can download a live version of Sabayon Linux with XGL and Beryl preinstalled on it. Basically you pop the disk in, set boot priority to boot off of CD, then load into Linux.
